Every July, the nation's best wrestlers travel to Fargo, North Dakota, to compete at USAW Cadet/Junior Greco and Freestyle Nationals. With just about all 50 states being represented and all eyes on the prestigious tournament, each state must create its own singlet to represent the homeland with a different design every year.
Thousands of singlets have been created over the years specifically for Fargo--below, we picked our favorites from the past 10 years.
Which state will have the best singlets this year? You'll have to watch to find out. Watch every mat LIVE right here.
#10: 2006: Pennsylvania
The two-piece singlet, better known as the "doublet," had never been worn before at Fargo. Pennsylvania, along with Texas and New Mexico, sported the two-piece singlets for the first time in 2006. But Pennsylvania's doublets had much more character than Texas' and New Mexico's gear. A man with a pick axe, representing a coal miner, was displayed on front of the doublet's shirt. At the time, it was rare for teams to have anything related to their state on a singlet other than the state's outline, flag colors and name.
#9: 2007: Maryland
Maryland debuted some controversial singlets in 2007. On the front, nothing seemed wrong--a large "M" was complemented by a blue crab logo with the state's flag design flanking the singlet. But the back of the singlet featured "GOT CRABS?" It may not have been the best choice for a state whose slogan translates to "Strong deeds and gentle words," but Maryland's creativity outshined several Fargo singlets of the past.
#8: 2008: Wisconsin
There's just about nothing Wisconsinites love more than the Green Bay Packers. In 2008, Team Wisconsin paid tribute to its beloved Packers by putting a graphic of Lambeau Field on its singlets. Wisconsin was one of pioneers of adding real images of significant landmarks in their state to their singlet. The following year, Wisconsin returned to Fargo with UW-Madison's Camp Randall Stadium on its singlets. Florida played copycat that year with a Florida Gator logo on its blue singlets and a Tampa Bay Buccaneer logo on its red singlets.
#7: 2009: New York
The mafia emerged in New York and still has strong roots in The Empire State. So Team New York paid homage to the state's troubled past by putting a graphic of a mobster on its singlets complemented by pinstripes, similar to a mobster's suit and the New York Yankees, along with bullet holes scattered across the singlet.
#6: 2010: Connecticut
For smaller states such as Connecticut, singlets are often kept simple. But in 2010, Connecticut added some flavor to its singlets by blending shades of green with blue. The cool-colored singlets were a nice change from the basic blue-and-red singlet.
#5: 2011: Massachusetts
Fenway Park is one of most historic sporting venues of all time, and home to the Green Monster. Team Massachusetts made the Green Monster come to life on their singlets in 2011. The large image of the monster emerging from the wall, along with an image of Fenway Park, made it easy to recognize Massachusetts without even having to look for a state name.
#4: 2012: Missouri
Missouri didn't need an image or a cool font to make its singlets pop in 2012. Instead, they just used warm and cool colors and threw plaid stripes on their singlets. Missouri proved you could still be stylish without having anything related to your state on your singlet.
Olympian J'den Cox repped the blue singlet against Kyle Snyder back in 2012.
#3: 2013: Ohio
Ohio was not shy of using whatever colors it wanted in 2013. The funky mixture of light green, baby blue, and orange red may have made many unsure what state it represented, so to be safe, the Buckeye State put the word "Ohio" on the singlet not once, not twice, but four times.
#2: 2014: Oregon
Oregon is known for bringing the best swag to Fargo. Unfortunately, these singlets didn't even make it there. The USAW banned the singlets due to an inappropriate comment tattooed on the lumberjack's arm. But for how much controversy and attention this singlet got, it deserves to be on the list.
#1: 2015: Connecticut
Oregon took a gamble in 2014 that didn't pay off. The following year, Connecticut played their cards right and had some pretty sick singlets thanks to Barbarian Apparrel. Connecticut's red singlet featured a king card, while its blue featured a joker card, which symbolized the state's two major casinos.
