Team USA's reigning Cadet World Champions Yianni Diakomihalis and Gable Steveson find themselves in a familiar place: The World Finals.
Though both have been dominant throughout, Yianni had a very challenging semi against the same Japanese opponent he defeated in the World finals last year. Gable has not been challenged up to this point but will be facing a very skilled Russian in the finals.
No home cookin' here, Yianni wins big against Georgia:
Gable cruises in quarters:
In addition to Yianni and Gable, Travis Wittlake will also be wrestling for a medal this morning. He'll be working for Bronze. He fell in round two before winning two tough repechage matches to earn himself a spot in the Bronze medal match.
At 46kg, Malik Heinselman failed to get pulled back into repechage after losing to an opponent from Uzbekistan. At 54kg Roman Bravo Young looked strong early, winning easily in round 1. His next match, RBY had a lead but gave up a late 4 pointer that ultimately lost him the bout. His opponent then failed to make the finals, eliminating the Arizona hammer.
Roman Bravo Young's heartbreaking loss:
Team USA has earned 6 medals, with a possibility of a 7th if Wittlake were to win. They find themselves trailing Russia by 5 points heading into the final round. Team USA will be unable to win the title but have locked up a strong 2nd place finish.
