Top 7 Upsets Of The Weekend

Here are the top seven NCAA wrestling upsets of the past weekend.

The wrestling matchups during the Thanksgiving weekend looked like they would be interesting, but I originally didn't see a lot of upset potential. I underestimated this past weekend considerably, and all told there were seven upsets that stood out. With Cliff Keen Las Vegas, Iowa vs. SDSU, UNI Open, Pitt at Oklahoma State, and the Journeymen Tussle all on tap this week, can you imagine the upsets we'll be discussing this time next week?

7) #17 Mark Grey, Cornell over #14 Tyson Dippery, Rutgers

Mark Grey was a big mystery to me coming into this year. He's bounced around weights and struggled to regain the consistency that had him in the round of 12 as a freshman. He had a very solid 6-4 win over Tyson Dippery at Grapple at the Garden this past weekend.

6) #20 Javier Gasca, Michigan State over #17 Ronnie Perry, Lock Haven

I was told in no uncertain terms that Javier Gasca would be placing this year. A great win over Ronnie Perry suggests that person might be right. Gasca is a great talent. If he's consistent, he will be dangerous.

5) Bryce Steiert, UNI over #16 Seldon Wright, Old Dominion

Bryce Steiert is still a bit of a mystery up at 165. I'm excited to see how he does. A win over Seldon Wright suggests he could be a great option for the Panthers at this weight.

4) Gavin Londoff, Appalachian State over #17 Joey Moon, UNC

This dual was an upset in general. Not only did Gavin Londoff down No. 17 Joey Moon, but also the Mountaineers upended the favorites in North Carolina in the dual as well.

3) Drew Foster, UNI over #10 Jack Dechow, Old Dominion

Just a week or so removed from his win over Willie Miklus, Jack Dechow suffers an unranked loss to Northern Iowa's Drew Foster. My thoughts are that Foster is legit considering how Dechow had looked prior. Then again, it was only two weeks ago that Dechow was pinned by Ian Baker of Princeton.

2) Austin Schafer, Oklahoma State over #5 Michael Kroells, Minnesota

While it's not the No. 1 upset of the week, it's likely the most important win of the week for any team. To see Austin Schafer win in a non-flukish manner says a lot: 1) It puts him on a fairly elite level since few guys have wins over Michael Kroells. He's a very consistent heavy. 2) Schafer being a contributor at a weight where Oklahoma State was thought to be getting little contributions from could be just what the Cowboys need to hold on to their No. 1 ranking over the surging Nittany Lions.

1) James Benjamin, Buffalo over #4 Brett Harner, Princeton

There's great momentum in Buffalo if you look closely at the results the Bulls are having. Wins like this for James Benjamin and other Buffalo wrestlers may start to become more of the norm.
