When highly anticipated matches end up surpassing expectations, that's about as much as you can ask for as a wrestling fan.
The Powerade Christmas Tournament is consistently one of the toughest high school showcases in the country. Year after year, this tournament not only features top wrestlers from across the country but also produces amazing matches that will be remembered for years. The stakes are high at Powerade and as the level of competition rises, so do the performances of the top wrestlers.
As we near the start of the 2016 Powerade on Thursday, let's take a look back at some of the tournament's classic battles.
Chance Marsteller vs Cody Wiercioch (2012)
Chance Marsteller was undefeated in his high school career and the No. 1 pound-for-pound wrestler in the country when he faced Cody Weircioch in the 2012 Powerade finals. Marsteller had been out all season due to injury, and his first competition back was up at 170 instead of his regular weight of 160. This was the first time we saw Marsteller pushed to the brink in this low-scoring but action-packed finals match.
This was another showdown between in-state talent taking on one of the best in the nation. While it appeared one-sided for most of the match, there is a reason we wrestle the entire length before determining the winner. Watch this match and the fireworks that erupt in the closing seconds.
One of the nation's premier high school tournaments is once again live on FloWrestling. Don't miss your chance to see Franklin Regional, Wyoming Seminary, and Bergen Catholic in action, along with Spencer Lee, Gavin Teasdale, Noah Adams, Shane Griffith, and so many more.
