Fingers Crossed: Top 7 Gotta-See Southern Scuffle Matches
Here is a look at the top seven must-watch matches of the 2017 Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Jan 1-2.
Live On Flo This Week: Dec 29-30: Mt Mat Madness | Dec 29-30: Powerade | Dec 29-30: Prep Slam IX | Jan 1-2: Southern Scuffle
Everyone wants to see Heil/McKenna, Smith/Palacio, Pfarr/Cox, and Collica/Mayes. But these are some potential Southern Scuffle matches that I want to see for a couple of reasons. 1) To learn something. Where to these guys stack up? How much have things changed in a year? (This applies for the Lugo/Stroker match.) Or 2) Pure entertainment value. Guys scoring points, taking risks, and wrestling an entertaining style.
7) Pat Lugo, Edinboro vs Fredy Stroker, Minnesota
Stroker was clearly the better guy in the summer of 2015. Now a year and change removed, Lugo is top 10 and Stroker is probably on the bubble to qualify for NCAAs. Both went to college right after Fargo -- Lugo to Edinboro and Stroker to Minnesota. It's an interesting bout in terms of how much can change in a little bit of time. Or perhaps we'll learn that things aren't so different after all? That's why I want to see it.
6) May Bethea, Penn vs Dylan Palacio, Cornell
These two had a bizarre EIWA match last year. Palacio won with his bottom wrestling, securing two key reversals for the 5-4 win. I want to see what Bethea can do with another crack.
5) Nick Piccinnini, OK State vs Jack Mueller, UVA
These are two really fun freshmen with fearless offense. Both have great leg attacks and are capable on the mat. I am really unsure how this match would go, which is why I'm so excited to watch. Both have blinding speed. They'll be two of the quickest 125s in the field, no doubt. Mueller's top game could prove to be the difference should they meet.
Mueller blitzes Howard for dominant win:
4) Kaid Brock, OK State vs Mitch McKee, Minnesota
Yes, we've seen this one somewhere around 74 times, BUT only once in folkstyle, and if there's one thing we've learned about this rivalry it's that no two matches are the same between these two. It was a major for Brock last time around. But with McKee not coming off an hour weigh-in, combined with the trend of these matches looking different each time, I expect a tightening of the score this time around. Combine that with how exciting both guys are to watch, I know you want to see it too.
3) Ben Darmstadt, Cornell vs Brett Pfarr, Minnesota
This is a bit of a present-versus-the-future type of match. It features two long, ultra-scrambly wrestlers with great chops on top. Pfarr will be a favorite against anyone not named J'den Cox. Still, Darmstatd's upside and style will make this entertaining nonetheless.
Brett Pfarr cements his No. 2 ranking against Jared Haught:
2) Mark Hall, Penn State vs Taylor Lujan, UNI
This is another easy one to pick out, featuring two incredible athletes with a fearless mentality. Neither will back down or pay the necessary respect to his opponent. That could lead to some amazing upper body exchanges and scrambles. If one of them is willing to attack a leg, we may not see a break in action until they go out of bounds or the period ends. They're both that excellent in scrambles.
In case you forgot how fun Taylor Lujan is to watch:
1) Jared Prince, Navy vs Jaydin Eierman, Missouri
Anyone who has watched both of these guys is nodding in agreement. Both will try just about anything in the name of scoring points. Mistakes don't faze them. They just got to get out and try something else. Barring a quick pin (someone is going to get on his back, for sure), we could see 15 points put up easily. In the back of my mind, I think Eierman bumped up just to give the fans this match. I promise you it would be awesome.
