On the men's side, Nick Gwiazdowski went 0-1, losing in the first round to Adlan Ibragimov (RUS). The final score was 6-4, though the crucial exchange came when Gwiz was chasing a shot, and ended up rolling through on his back giving up four. Ibragimov then lost 3-1 to Anzor Boltukaev, knocking Gwiz out of repechage.
Cody Brewer won his first match 6-2 over Usman Shakhgiriev (RUS) before running into a buzzsaw in round two. Gadzhimurad Rashidov of Russia. Brewer got teched 12-1 by the reigning European champion. When Rashidov, who won four medals at age level world championships, gutted his way into the finals, Brewer was pulled back into repechage.
There, Brewer was paired up with 57kg Olympic silver medalist Rei Higuchi (JPN). Brewer struck first, but Higuchi countered with two takedowns of his own. Higuchi nearly ended the match with a leglace at the end of the first, but ran out of time. Brewer came out firing in the second period and took down Higuchi twice. He got in on legs a third time, but was neckwhipped to his back and pinned.
