Pat Downey No Longer On Iowa State
Pat Downey has reportedly been removed from the Iowa State Cyclone wrestling program
Live This Week On Flo: Feb. 24/25 - National Preps | Feb. 24/25 - NJCAA National Championships | Feb. 26 - National Collegiate Open
Pat Downey is no longer on Iowa State's wrestling team, according to a story first reported by The Open Mat. Per a statement provided to Alex Steen over at TOM by Kevin Jackson,
Downey began a twitter rant this morning about not being able to wrestle at Big 12s, not the first time he has had such an outburst on social media. He was an All American last year at 197 pounds for the Cyclones, going 11-4 on the year with a fifth place finish at NCAAs. Seven of his 15 matches came at the national tournament.
The bulk of Downey's time on the mat in college came at Iowa Central, where he went 43-0 as the junior college national champion in 2015. The 24-year-old wrestled just 22 matches during his time in Ames.
Downey has attended three schools, starting his career at Nebraska after spending several years at the Olympic Training Center. It is unclear at this time if the former junior world silver medalist will finish out his schooling at Iowa State, or look to transfer somewhere else. He does have one year of collegiate eligibility remaining, though coaches may be wary to take a chance on him.
The news comes on the same day that Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard held an introductory press conference for new head coach Kevin Dresser.

Patrick Downey is no longer a member of the Iowa State wrestling team because of repeated violations of team rules. He will no longer compete for the Cyclones, including this year's Big 12 or NCAA Championships. There has been rampant speculation about Downey's status, since he has only wrestled seven matches this year, with the last one coming over a month ago against Northern Iowa.
