The round of 12 is when the tears start really streaming, both of joy and at the agony of not accomplishing a dream of becoming an All American. Below is a list of every bloodround match at this year's NCAA tournament.
Brock Hudkins, Northern Illinois vs Nick Piccininni, Oklahoma State
Tim Lambert, Nebraska vs Joey Dance, Virginia Tech
Nathan Kraisser, Campbel vs Freddie Rodriguez, SIU Edwardsville
Commentary: The top matchup here is an appropriate one for St. Patty's day. Hudkins is one of three Northern Illinois guys in the bloodround, compared to Oklahoma State's five. Dance vs Lambert is the lowest combined seeded total for a round of 12 match. Rodriguez is attempted to become SIUE's first All American since Tim Wright in 1987 and has beaten Kraisser twice this year. Campbell has never had an All American.
Mitch McKee, Minnesota vs Zane Richards, Illinois
Scott Delvecchio, Rutgers vs Eric Montoya, Nebraska
Scotty Parker, Lehigh vs Brian Lantry, Buffalo
Commentary: Six of the eight guys in this round of 12 have never placed at the national tournament, and McKee and Micic are trying to get on the podium as freshmen. Some may be rooting for a rematch of Richards/Parker in the third or fifth place bout based on the controversial outcome of their second round match.
Joey McKenna, Stanford vs Jaydin Eierman, Missouri
Jimmy Gulibon, Penn State vs Kevin Jack, NC State
Colton McCrystal, Nebraska vs Tommy Thorn, Minnesota
Commentary: Gulibon and Jack were both AAs two years ago when it was last held in St. Louis, with each making the semis. They will wrestle each other here in the bloodround after neither placed last year. Nebraska has a guy in this round at each of the first three weights.
Steve Bleise, Northern Illinois vs Alex Kocer, South Dakota State
Andrew Crone, Wisconsin vs Ken Theobold, Rutgers
Justin Oliver, Central Michigan vs Solomon Chishko, Virginia Tech
Commentary: Bleise, along with two other Huskies, are trying to become Northern Illinois' first AAs since Ben Heizer made the finals in 2004. Kocer will try to add a second All American to Chris Bono's resume after Seth Gross made the semis this morning. Chishko is trying to keep the Hokies in the running for a team trophy, while Oliver is the only Chippewa left. Could Theobold not place after upsetting 2 seed Anthony Collica?
Sal Mastriani, Virginia Tech vs BJ Clagon, Rider
May Bethea, Penn vs Michael Kemerer, Iowa
Archie Colgan, Wyoming vs Paul Fox, Stanford
Commentary: All of the schools here have had AAs recently, though Clagon would be an interesting placer as one of three guys to make it to the podium out of the pigtail round. Bethea would like to match what his teammate Casey Kent did a year ago at Madison Square Garden.
Bryce Steiert, UNI vs Chandler Rogers, Oklahoma State
Brandon Womack, Cornell vs Anthony Valencia, Arizona State
Nick Wanzek, Minnesota vs Daniel Lewis, Missouri
Commentary: Hughes and Rider is a fun matchup of top game against headlocks. Rogers was a toe away from pinning IMar in the quarters.
Ryan Preisch, Lehigh vs Myles Amine, Michigan
Jadaen Bernstein, Navy vs Zac Brunson, Illinois
Kyle Crutchmer, Oklahoma State vs Alex Meyer, Iowa
Commentary: Can never go wrong with an Oklahoma State vs Iowa bloodround match. Preisch/Amine is one that the whole wrestling world should be excited about. Residori joins Clagon and Doug Vollaro as guys trying to place after having a pigtail match.
Myles Martin, Ohio State vs Jack Dechow, ODU
Nick Gravina, Rutgers vs TJ Dudley, Nebraska
Nathan Jackson, Indiana vs Emery Parker, Illinois
Commentary: Martin's struggles this year started with his quarterfinal loss to Jack Dechow at Midlands, so this could be a revenge match, or it could be a a guy going from national champ to DNP. Dudley and Gravina split last year, but have not met this year. Macchiavello would be a surprise AA after starting the year behind Peter Renda, who wound up redshirting.
Shawn Scott, Northern Illinois vs Ryan Wolfe, Rider
Ca$h Wilcke, Iowa vs Kevin Beazley, ODU
Danny Chaid, UNC vs Preston Weigel, Oklahoma State
Commentary: Studebaker and McCutcheon split this year, with the Husker getting a pin in the dual and McCutcheon taking a 3-2 overtime win at Big Tens. Studebaker has lost the past two years in the round of 12; McCutcheon lost in the bloodround the last time NCAAs was in St. Louis. Wilcke and Chaid are trying to become unseeded AAs.
Doug Vollaro, Lehigh vs Michael Kroells, Minnesota
Youssif Hemida, Maryland vs Tanner Hall, Arizona State
Denzel Dejournette, App St vs Conan Jennings, Northwestern
Commentary: Vollaro is our final pigtailed wrestler to make the bloodround, and was unseeded like Hemida and Jennings.
