Bo's Bonus Point Parade
Bo's Bonus Point Parade
Penn State's Bo Nickal wrestled dominantly and smart to claim the 184-pound NCAA national championship.
Until the finals, Bo Nickal had not had a full match at the NCAA tournament and had only spent 34 seconds in the third period. The Penn State sophomore spent less than 20 minutes on the mat heading into the 184-pound championship, with the quickest win coming in the semifinals against Iowa's Sammy Brooks.
Then he capped it all off with a hard-fought win over two-time returning national champion and now four-time All-American Gabe Dean of Cornell.
Round 1: Bo Nickal, PSU vs. Mitch Sliga, Northwestern
Talk about starting off with a bang. Nickal was dominant out the gate as he teched Sliga.
Round 2: Bo Nickal, PSU vs. Steven Schneider, Binghampton
Let the Bo-nus points roll. After grabbing a lead 15-3, Nickal put an end to the match with a fall in the third period.
Quarterfinals: Bo Nickal, PSU vs. TJ Dudley, Nebraska
Sit and turn, head hunt, cradle...game over. Nickal continued to roll in the quarters as he pinned returning NCAA runner-up Dudley to advance to the semifinals.
Semifinals: Bo Nickal, PSU vs. Sammy Brooks, Iowa
Brooks was certainly looking for some revenge after Nickal pinned him in 38 seconds earlier this season, but this time around, it simply took Nickal a little longer to get the same result.
Finals: Bo Nickal, PSU vs. Gabe Dean, Cornell
Mission complete. Dean may have scored first, but Nickal was able to answer and score the necessary points to get the win over the two-time returning champ.
