Can DeSanto Upset Mejia Too?
Overnight, Austin DeSanto went from being a good high school wrestler to one whose name will go down among legends.
Overnight, Austin DeSanto went from being a good high school wrestler to one whose name will go down along side Larry Owens, Rulon Gardner, Helen Maroulis and now Vincenzo Joseph for pulling off huge upsets at the most critical moments.
DeSanto had one of the biggest wins in high school history earlier this month when he stopped 3x World Champion Spencer Lee from becoming a 4x undefeated Pennsylvania high school state champion in the state finals 6-5.
Austin had a career record of 188-7, he was a one-time state champion and will be attending Drexel University in the fall.
He will face California's Justin Mejia at 126lbs in the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic this weekend. Mejia is fresh off of his fourth California state title, just the second wrestler to ever accomplish that feat in the Golden State, which has nearly 27,000 high school wrestlers from 900 school and just one division for the entire state. He won his finals match 3-2 over Robert Garcia of Selma.
Mejia had a career record of 168-1, four state titles and will be attending the University of Illinois in the fall.
Both wrestlers finished off their senior campaigns with undefeated seasons, DeSanto going 53-0 while Mejia was 37-0.
Mejia's lone high school loss came in December of his freshman year, he avenged the loss later that year in the state finals.
The two will tangle this Saturday at The Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic in one of the most anticipated bouts of the event. If DeSanto can pull off another upset it would be quite a month for him.
You can watch the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic streamed LIVE on FloWrestling this Saturday starting at 4:00pm EST with Team Georgia vs the WPIAL All-Star team followed immediately by the USA vs PA at 6:00pm EST.
