Can't-Miss Cadet & University Greco Matches
Check out our can't miss matches of the Cadet and University Greco National tournaments.
Grudge matches on top of grudge matches.
The Greco tournament is going to bring some serious heat from the jump at the UWW Cadet and University Nationals in Akron, Ohio, this weekend. In the cadet ranks, there are some guys who have history against one another who are going to hit in the early rounds. The university side has some pretty big names that may hit early as well.
Check out our can't-miss matches of the Cadet and University Greco National tournaments.
Cohlton Schultz vs. Tyler Curd
When Tyler Curd teched returning champ Cohlton Schultz in Fargo last year, it sent a shockwave through the Fargodome that carried over to when they met again in freestyle. Schultz was able to get his revenge, but it came with a little shove. Either way, this will be a big one, especially if Schultz plans to make another world team.
Watch Curd take out Schultz in the Fargo semis.
Dylan Ragusin vs. Brenden Chaowanapibool
This will be a rematch of their Fargo final, which was won by Ragusin, that could come in the semis at 46kg. Ragusin dominated that title match with a 10-0 tech to take the title.
Carson Manville vs. Nick Raimo
This is an anticipated match in freestyle, and it could all get really stirred up in the round of 16 of the Greco tournament if these two hit. Ultimately, Raimo has to win his first match to get to Manville, who has a bye to the second round, but if you've paid attention the last few months, you know that there is some unfinished business between the two, regardless of the style.
Tyler Dow vs. Will Lewan
Both of these guys own Fargo Greco titles, with Lewan claiming his title this last year and Dow finishing as a runner-up. Dow was a champ the year prior. But they have the potential to meet in the quarterfinals, and as seasoned as they are I expect some fireworks.
Cohlton Schultz vs. Jace Punke
Punke was a Greco runner-up in Fargo last year to Curd, who you already know has a bit of bad blood with Schultz. Anyway, this pair of Fargo finalists is going to square off in the first round of the tournament. It should make for an interesting way to kick things off.
Dalton Roberts vs. Ibrahim Bunduka
One early-round matchup you will want to be on the look at for is at 59kg. Dalton Roberts of the NYAC finished fifth at the last U.S. Open in Las Vegas. He'll be attempting to improve on that finish here in Akron. To do so, he will likely have to get by Ibrahim Bunduka in the quarterfinals. Bunduka finished fourth at the 2015 Greco university nationals and qualified for the 2017 NCAA tournament.
Loaded At 80kg
Two-time junior Greco national champ Geordan Speiller sits atop the field as the No. 1 seed. Jon Jay Chavez, the 2013 cadet world bronze medalist, is on the other side of the bracket with the No. 2 seed. Looking to upend both favorites is crafty veteran Vladyslav Dombrovskiy. Additionally, keep an eye on two folkstyle hammers who could meet in the round of 16: Kimball Bastian of Utah Valley and NCAA qualifier Trace Engelkes of Northern Illinois.
NCAA Heavyweights Going Greco
Up at 98kg, the light heavyweights could see an explosive matchup in the semifinals of the bottom half of bracket. Duke All-American Jacob Kasper is on a collision course with Oklahoma State grad Austin Schafer. Schafer got the best of Kasper in the senior Greco tournament at the U.S. Open last April, pinning the Blue Devil in under two minutes. Expect fireworks if the two meet again. Waiting for them in the finals will likely be 2017 U.S. Open champion G'Angelo Hancock, one of the most promising young Greco wrestlers in the country.
