An undefeated 3A state champ in Iowa this past year at 160 pounds, Shapiro is ranked 44th on class of 2018 big board. However, since the season ended Shapiro has been competing up at 195lbs.
In that time, the future Cyclone placed third in UWW Cadet trials at 85kg and went undefeated at junior duals. Last year, he was third at preseason nationals and seventh in cadet freestyle in Fargo.
Shapiro projects as a 184 or 197 in college, two areas of need for ISU. NCAA qualifier Marcus Harrington will be out of eligibility after Shapiro's redshirt season, and Sammy Colbray could possibly bump up to heavyweight. They have no wrestlers on the roster at 184 with NCAA tournament experience.
Watch Shapiro take out Tyler Barnes in Akron last month.
