2012: The Best Super 32 Field Ever?
2012: The Best Super 32 Field Ever?
Was the 2012 Super 32 the best ever? We take a look at the numbers!
We are mere days away from the start of the premier preseason high school wrestling tournament of the year.
The number of top 20 wrestlers heading to Super 32 in Greensboro, NC, this weekend is astounding. But high school rankings only tell half the story. With the benefit of hindsight, we can look back at Super 32s of years past to see how the careers of former place-winners panned out. Peering back in time, the 2012 edition just may be the most stacked ever.
At least until a few more years go by and we can do a retrospective on subsequent tournaments.

Though many of the participants have up to four years of NCAA eligibility remaining, here are the highlights -- so far -- of the Super 32 Class of 2012:
NCAA National Championships: 11
NCAA All-American Honors: 42
UWW Cadet & Junior World Medals: 14
Olympic Games & UWW Senior Gold Medals: 2
Watch Mark Hall win a belt over Drexel's Garett Hammond at the 2012 Super 32:
Those highlights come with the two main caveats. The first is that those numbers will almost certainly grow as the 2012 participants continue their careers. The second is that it is very possible, likely even, that I miscounted or overlooked someone. Please let us know if you spot an error!
To double-check our count, please find the full brackets to the tournament here. Additionally, the table below has all the top eight finishers from that tournament, along with any NCAA tournament qualifiers who did no place (that I could find) with their NCAA and UWW accolades. For the NCAA column, every tournament finish should be accounted for, with each question mark representing a remaining year of eligibility. For the UWW column, I tried to catch every world-level medal for the cadets and junior age groups. Please let us know if we missed anything in the comments!
