Don't Sleep On These 7 Kids At Super 32
Don't Sleep On These 7 Kids At Super 32
Seven sleepers you should learn before the 2017 Super 32 gets underway this weekend.
Everybody loves a darkhorse, an underdog, the sleeper. Every wrestling tournament has them, the guys who upset the apple cart and make life miserable for the favorites.
All seven of the guys below were deemed "sleepers" because they are unranked but I believe they all can place at Super 32. It's never too late to make a first impression, and these wrestlers are hoping to become fixtures in the hearts and minds of every fan out there.
Before we get started, a few reminders. Brackets will be on FloArena and should be released late Friday night, I highly recommend turning on the alerts for wrestlers you want to watch. Everything starts Saturday morning at 8am eastern time. WATCH LIVE HERE.
Two matches stick out for me when I think of his skillset. The first was his 3-2 upset over Jesse Vasquez at Super 32 last year, when he chose top and then put Vasquez on his back at the end of the second period. The other is a match he lost, but he gave Nico Aguilar fits at NHSCA junior nationals by turning every second of the match into a leg pass or roll through situation.
Look at him get to Jaret Lane's ankle in the FloNats semis. While he didn't finish the takedown, it's a great example of a freshman who already knows how to get in on shots against D1 quality competition.
And in this one, I like how he never concedes the takedown, especially considering the circumstances: about to be down by 6 in the final minute of the Fargo consi semis, he instead cuts the deficit to two and ultimately comes back for the win.
I also like another Indiana kid in Manzona Bryant at this weight; Bryant was sixth in single class Indiana as a freshman and beat Mosconi at NWCA duals. He bumped up to 138 for Fargo and didn't place, but his losses were to Fidel Mayora and Luka Wick. Either way, I see an Indiana kid giving headaches to the gaggle of ranked 132s this weekend.
He was only fourth at his state tournament and didn't place at the Doc B, so it's kinda difficult to pin down what his actual ceiling is. Just don't be surprised if he sticks a ranked stud in a gator roll on Saturday afternoon.
The 195lb bracket is pretty thin depth wise, with only three ranked guys in it (one of whom he's beaten in Hendrickson). Willie mentioned him as his darkhorse for the weight, and I picked him to place third.

113: Kai Orine, MO
The junior from Seckman high school went 48-1 en route to a Missouri state title. It has been almost a full year since his second place showing at Preseason Nationals, where he beat Jacob Lindsey and pinned Julian Tagg. Orine went 4-2 at Fargo and didn't place at NHSCAs, so this could be his last chance for a while to show that he can roll with the nation's elite.120: Anthony Sciotto, NY
Sciotto made me look very smart when I had him on my sleeper list for the Journeymen Fall Classic at the beginning of the month. Since he's still not ranked, I'm picking him again. A Navy commit, he was third in the state last year, losing only to Greg Diakomihalis. Two matches stick out for me when I think of his skillset. The first was his 3-2 upset over Jesse Vasquez at Super 32 last year, when he chose top and then put Vasquez on his back at the end of the second period. 126: Keegan O'Toole, WI
Maybe it's because I just saw Ben Askren, but I think one of his AWA up-and-comers O'Toole makes a name for himself this weekend. He can score in a variety of ways, from elbow control boot scoots to throwbys, and is very solid at fighting out of whizzers by going cross body ride to finish takedowns.Look at him get to Jaret Lane's ankle in the FloNats semis.
132: Alex Mosconi, IN
Mosconi beat Kevon Davenport this summer at Cadet Duals, a kid who I think has tremendous upside. Mosconi wound up 4th in Fargo and I'm surprised he's still at 132. A tall lanky kid, he's a hard right leg lead that dares people to shoot. He's not necessarily spectacular at any one thing, but he's difficult to score on and can go upper body or mess around in short offense, with his length creating a lot of problems for his opponents.I also like another Indiana kid in Manzona Bryant at this weight; Bryant was sixth in single class Indiana as a freshman and beat Mosconi at NWCA duals. He bumped up to 138 for Fargo and didn't place, but his losses were to Fidel Mayora and Luka Wick. Either way, I see an Indiana kid giving headaches to the gaggle of ranked 132s this weekend.
182: Josh Stillings, PA
A member of Drexel's excellent 2018 recruiting class, Stilling has grown into either a 184 or 197 in college. Stillings made the Pennsylvania AAA state finals this past season after a fourth place finish his sophomore year, both at 160lbs. A quality kid from a solid program in Pennridge that has produced guys like Scotty Parker, Kyle Gentile, and Matty Parker, Stillings is looking to kick his senior year off with a bang in a weight that features seven nationally ranked guys. Check out his FloNationals quarterfinal win over Carter Starocci below.145: Anthony Ulaszek, CO
Ulaszek's reign of terror at Junior Duals this summer is hard to get out of my mind. As Willie said "he was double parked" after seeing that he pinned all nine of his opponents, including Sammy Sasso and Fidel Mayora. He also has Greco wins over Dawson Sihavong, Frankie Tal-Shahar and Carter Tuttle. He was only fourth at his state tournament and didn't place at the Doc B, so it's kinda difficult to pin down what his actual ceiling is. Just don't be surprised if he sticks a ranked stud in a gator roll on Saturday afternoon.
195: Konner Doucet, OK
An Oklahoma state champ as a freshman, we have him 24th on the Class of 2020 Big Board. He's picked up some good wins over other fellow young big men in Matt Cover and Wyatt Hendrickson, and has twice taken Ashton Sharp to the brink. The 195lb bracket is pretty thin depth wise, with only three ranked guys in it (one of whom he's beaten in Hendrickson). Willie mentioned him as his darkhorse for the weight, and I picked him to place third.
