7 Best Matches From The Midlands Archive
The Midlands Wrestling Championships has had some amazing matches over the years. Enjoy these top seven matches from the Midlands archive.
It's the holiday season and it means that the Midlands Wrestling Championships is upon us once again. I will be attending the event for the first time and can't wait to get there to witness some of the best wrestling in the country firsthand.
Looking back at the past Midlands Championships here are seven best Midlands matches you may have missed:
133 Joe Colon (UNI) vs Tony Ramos (Iowa) 2013
This was a big match with two confident wrestlers. And there were bragging rights on the line as both guys wrestled in the state of Iowa. Most people wouldn't have predicted this match to go exactly the way it did. Colon took control, crunched Ramos up and picked up the pin.
157 Tyler Berger (Nebraska) vs Michael Kemerer (Iowa) 2016
There was not a ton of hype before this match, but there was plenty afterward. Michael Kemerer and Tyler Berger battled through the entire regulation and overtime periods. Kem-Dawg came out ahead and tempers were flying afterward.
165 Jordan Burroughs (Nebraska) vs Andrew Howe (Oklahoma) 2010
At the time, this was the most hyped match of the year. Everyone wondered if Jordan Burroughs would be able to hang with Andrew Howe after Burroughs moved up to 165 from 157. We all know the answer now.
133: Jimmy Kennedy (Illinois) vs Nick Simmons (Michigan State) 2006
Nick Simmons, the king of spladles!
Ben Askren vs Jake Herbert (2010 Super Match)
They met in the NCAA finals four years earlier with Askren coming away the victor. Since that time Jake Herbert had earned a silver medal at the World Championships. People were very excited for this super match to take place at the 2010 Midlands and the match did not disappoint!
133: Ryan Mango (Stanford) vs Daniel Dennis (HWC) (2012)
In 2012 Ryan Mango was in college and Daniel Dennis was just about to start his wandering journey out to California before making a return to the sport. This was a back and forth match which was highlighted by a big throw from Mango in the third which gave him the win.
125 Thomas Gilman (Iowa) vs Josh Terao (American) 2016
A semifinal where Terao trapped Gilman in a spladle and things got a tad chippy at the end.
This year's event looks to be outstanding with many of the top competitors in the nation coming together in Chicago just a few days after Christmas.
