Why Jordan Oliver Can't Qualify For World Team Trials

Jordan Oliver's one-year suspension by USADA was announced on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 9th, 2018. We know he can't compete until April 29th, 2018, but what does that really mean?

Primarily, it means he cannot compete at this year's World Team Trials and thus cannot earn a spot on the world team.

As it stands, the official qualifying criteria can be found at the bottom of this article. There are are currently five ways to qualify for the Trials:

  • 2017 Senior World Team Member
  • November 2017 Dave Schultz Highest Placer
  • March 2018 Bill Farrell Highest Placer
  • March 2018 NCAA Division 1 Champion
  • April 2018 U.S. Open Top 7 Finisher

The U.S. Open begins on Friday, April 27th and ends on Saturday, April 28th. As of now, there is no last chance qualifier in place for the 2018 WTT.

Since the finals for last year's Open ended on April 29th, that was the day of Oliver's positive test. As such, a one year suspension means Oliver will miss the opportunity to wrestle for a world team spot by just two days.
