The Last 5 Years Of Undefeated Freshman Regular Seasons

One of the most difficult things to do in college wrestling is go through a season unscathed. Though undefeated records are elusive for most, a handful of freshmen lately have been able to go through their regular seasons without a loss.

Since 2014, there have been eight freshmen to enter their conference tournaments with zero losses. Six of those came in the Big Ten, with NC State's Hayden Hidlay (ACC) this year and Arizona State's Zahid Valencia (Pac-12) last year being the exceptions.

Seven of them accomplished this feat as redshirt freshmen, except for Zain Retherford, who was a true freshman. Let's take a look at how each fared in the postseason.

None of them finished lower than fifth at the NCAA tournament, and two won their conference's title. But Isaiah Martinez was the only one to finish undefeated, and he was the first to do so since Cael Sanderson in 1999.

Both Hidlay and Marinelli have their work cut out for them to bring national titles back to Raleigh, NC, and Iowa City, Iowa, respectively. But based on recent history, they will be placing high and scoring a lot of points for their teams in Cleveland in a few weeks.
