When he's not defending his title belt as the light heavyweight champion of the UFC, Daniel Cormier will also be coaching the Gilroy High School wrestling team. Cormier was announced as the new head coach by today by the school in Gilroy, California, south of San Jose.

Gilroy has a long tradition of excellence and has produced numerous blue-chip recruits, including two-time NCAA champion Jesse Delgado at Illinois and more recently All-American Paul Fox at Stanford. Gilroy finished the year ranked No. 20 in the nation

Daniel Cormier's wrestling roots run deep as well. A three-time state champion from Louisiana, Cormier was recruited by the legendary John Smith out of junior college and was a two-time All-American at Oklahoma State. Cormier transitioned smoothly to the freestyle senior circuit, making six consecutive world teams, including two Olympic teams. Cormier's highest finish was a bronze-medal run at the 2007 World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Cormier then made the leap into the MMA, eventually climbing to the top of the light heavyweight division, where he earned the title belt and successfully defended it three times. Cormier is scheduled to bump up to heavyweight to take on the reigning champ Stipe Miocic, also an NCAA Division I collegiate wrestler, at UFC 226.

Regarding the new gig, Cormier told MMAFighting

"Wrestling has been the foundation for everything I’ve done. I’m excited to coach a great team in Gilroy and excited to give back to the town that has accepted me and my family so openly."

Cormier currently lives in the Santa Clara County, where Gilroy High School, is also located, with his wife and two children. An MMA gym, American Kickboxing Academy, where Cormier trains, is located in San Jose, also in Santa Clara County.

Cormier will reportedly not be drawing a salary for his services, and it's safe to say that the UFC champ will be most credentialed, lowest paid head coach in the Gilroy Mustangs' wrestling conference.
