Two-time NCAA qualifier Gary Wayne Harding has received his release from Oklahoma State and will enroll at North Carolina this fall to use his final year of college eligibility.
Harding finished 2-2 and 0-2 in his two trips to the NCAA tournament in 2016 and 2017, respectively, both years at 133 pounds. This past season he was squeezed out of a Cowboys lineup that featured All-Americans at every weight from 125 to 149 pounds. Harding still managed to place second at the always difficult Southern Scuffle in January.
Things only get more crowded for Oklahoma State next season in the lower weights, as Daton Fix and Kaden Gfeller both come off redshirts and every other starter except Dean Heil returns.
North Carolina's lightweight starters, on the other hand, are far from settled. Harding will be expected to challenge either Zach Sherman at 133 or AC Headlee at 141, both of whom are one-time NCAA qualifiers, though neither made it to the podium. Sherman does have a redshirt to use as well.
