Breaking Down The U23 Team Scores
Breaking Down The U23 Team Scores
How would the U23 team go if we scored the event like the NCAAs? Let's find out!
The U23 freestyle tournament has become the premier summer event for college-level athletes, as evidenced by the nearly 700 wrestlers who competed last weekend in Akron, Ohio. But what did the event mean for the college programs, some of which—like Clarion—sent as many as 25 participants?
The first place we can look is FloArena, which has all the brackets, final placements, and more. Under the "Teams and Competitors" tab, you can even get results of the team race. But that shows you club names and uses UWW team scoring. For a more familiar look, we scored the top eight placers in all 10 weight classes as if they were at the NCAA tournament and assigned those points to the wrestler's corresponding college team.
The top 10 of our hypothetical U23 NCAA team race is below.
PLACE | TEAM | POINTS |
1st | North Carolina State | 74 |
2nd | Nebraska | 67.5 |
3rd | Cornell | 65 |
4th | Ohio State | 59.5 |
5th | Oklahoma State | 53 |
6th | Minnesota | 44.5 |
7th | Wisconsin | 38.5 |
8th | Virginia Tech | 34.5 |
9th | Iowa | 33.5 |
10th | Stanford | 31.5 |
Ohio continues to be a good state for the Wolfpack in 2018. Pat Popolizio's squad finished fourth in Cleveland at the NCAAs last March and had the most impressive performance in Akron last weekend, thanks to their two U23 men's freestyle champs, Hayden Hidlay at 70kg and Michael Macchiavello at 97kg.
Nebraska and its five third-place finishers are the runners-up according to our unofficial tally. Cornell benefited from rostered team members plus Vito Arujau, who doesn't technically enroll until this fall and wrestled as a member of the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club.
