Helen Maroulis receives delay of 57 kg Final X World Team finals series against Hedrick to a later date due to injury

2017 World champion Helen Maroulis of the Sunkist Kids has notified USA Wrestling that she has requested a delay of her 57 kg best-of-three Championships Series against Alex Hedrick of the Titan Mercury WC to a later date due to injury.

Maroulis was scheduled to face Hedrick as part of Final X at Lehigh, which will be held in Grace Hall on the campus of Lehigh University on Saturday, June 23. That 57 kg series will not be held at Lehigh, and will be held at a location and date to be determined.

According to the 2018 General World Team Trials Procedures, “only a 2017 Senior World medalist who earned an automatic berth into the final wrestle-off can request a delay of the Final Wrestle-Off for medical reasons.” As is required for the delay to be awarded, Maroulis made the request more than 48 hours prior to the weigh-in, and also had a written certification of injury from a USA Wrestling approved medical doctor.

The 57 kg women’s finals series will be removed from the competition card on Saturday at Lehigh. The bout order will remain the same, with the other six Championship Series being held in the previous order of matches at 7:00 p.m. ET. There is an additional card of seven True Third Place matches, which will start at 5:00 p.m.

Maroulis is a 2016 Olympic champion and two-time World champion. She has won five World or Olympic medals for Team USA, and was the first American woman to win an Olympic wrestling gold medal. Maroulis won four WCWA college national titles, three for Simon Fraser and one at Missouri Baptist. 

Hedrick currently attends Simon Fraser, where she was a WCWA runner-up as a freshman and burst on the Senior scene by winning the 2018 U.S. Open.

Final X at Lehigh will determine six 2018 U.S. Senior World Teams in men’s and women’s freestyle wrestling. It will showcase a best-of-three series in each weight class, with the winner earning a spot on Team USA at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, October 20-28.
