The four-time California state champ’s story is kind of a long one even though it hasn’t really started when it comes to his on-the-mat action. After making a verbal commitment to Iowa as a high school sophomore, he ended up de-committing from the Hawkeyes then committing to Illinois. Unfortunately, an application error kept that from coming to fruition. He then recommitted to Iowa, but it just didn't work.
Now, with all that behind him, he’s made his way back to the area where he sharpened his skills, only this time he will be sporting a red singlet for Fresno State as coach Troy Steiner looks to lead the pack into it’s second season since being reinstated. Most recently we saw Mejia at the US Open in Las Vegas and the U23 World Team Trials in Akron, OH. He came up empty-handed going 1-2 at U23s and 2-2 at the Open.
But now that he’s back to action he will look to make his Division I debut this year. Mejia projects as a 125/133 for the Bulldogs. The hometown kid is certainly a great addition to the lineup full of standouts who grew up in the area.
