Just Like That! Assad Commits
The nation's #1 182lber makes his college commitment.
"Hey, sorry about committing on the day you ran my college list."
That's ok, Abe, as long as you're happy bud!
The nation's #1 182lber just committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes today. Abe Assad, a state champ in Illinois for powerhouse Glenbard North attained his #1 ranking by winning a loaded 80kg weight class at the Cadet World Team Trials. He'd go on to win Bronze at the Cadet World Championships.
Many people have supported me along the way, and I’m excited to share that I’ll be staying in the black & gold. I’ve decided to peruse my academic and athletic goals at the University of Iowa. Thank you to my coaches, family, and friends for their support. #GoHawks #RTFU #GDN pic.twitter.com/jXSby9H0YC

Earlier today, we ran Abe's school list, and got some insight into what he was looking for.
Originally committed to Army West Point, Assad re-opened his recruitment after Akron.
Lead recruiter for Iowa, Ryan Morningstar listed 184 as a need when we discussed his thoughts on Iowa recruiting and their targets for 2018-2019.
Of course Assad, as the #1 ranked wrestler in the weight class, was in play. Assad joins a rejuvenated and replenished Iowa haul. After getting arguably the top recruit in the country last year in Spencer Lee, the Hawkeyes have Assad, #13 in the Class of 2019, to go along with Patrick Kennedy (MN/174), who is #8 in 2020.
Assad had many good programs to choose from. So was it the campus? The coaches? The team members? The history? It all played a part, as did the recruiting momentum.
"I picked Iowa because i personally felt like it matched my wrestling style the best. That was the most important part," Assad said.
"Of course everything else was icing on the cake. Once I stepped on campus I immediately felt the love from the Iowa fan base. Also when I met both the Brands brothers they reminded me a lot of my high school coach now who I love! Another reason I picked Iowa was because I felt like we have a legitimate chance at winning a national title while I’m there. They are bringing in studs."
