Subsequent Shooting Scene, Sam Stoll Suffers Suspension
Iowa head coach Tom Brands reveals that All-American heavyweight Sam Stoll is healthy but will be suspended for the Hawkeyes' first dual versus Kent State.
Iowa head coach Tom Brands had good news and bad news regarding the Hawkeyes' senior All-American heavyweight, Sam Stoll. The good news is that the 2018 NCAA fifth-place 285-pounder is healthy. The bad news is he will be suspended for the Hawkeye's first dual of the year on November 9 against Kent State.
As reported by OurQuadCities.com, Brands announced:
Sam Stoll is ready to roll. He's moving forward... He will be suspended that first date when we go to Kent State.
Stoll was accidentally shot in the knee this offseason on April 17. His troubles were further compounded by a later misdemeanor charge of "false reporting to a public entity."
Stoll will be either the first or second highest returning All-American finisher at 285-pounds, depending on if Oregon State's Amar Dhesi returns this season. It can be safely assumed that Stoll will begin the season ranked very highly in the pre-season top 20, and his absence from the dual in Kent, Ohio will have little to no impact on his ability to maintain that high ranking throughout the season.
The Hawkeyes will similarly remain a heavy favorite against the Golden Flashes. Redshirt freshman Aaron Costello is expected to start the season at heavyweight in Stoll's stead, while blue chip true freshman Anthony Cassioppi remains on redshirt.
As such, the good news that Sam Stoll is healthy for his final year of eligibility far outweighs the bad news of his one-dual suspension, thus concluding another chapter in this strange tale from Iowa City as we inch our way closer to the start of the collegiate season.
