Ryan Sokol verbally committed to wrestle for the Iowa Hawkeyes after high school.
The 2017 Fargo champ is the first wrestler from the class of 2021 to announce his college decision.
Until this past weekend at the Journeymen Fall Classic, it had been quite some time since we had seen Sokol on the mat. The sophomore out of Simley high school in Minnesota did not wrestle at all last season due to several injuries, particularly to his back.
However, prior to his freshman year, he ripped through Northern Plains, Cadet Duals, and a Fargo Cadet bracket. Included in that run were two wins over National Prep champ Trevor Mastrogiovanni and a victory against FloNationals champ Dom Serrano.
Sokol is our #9 prospect on the Sophomore Big Board. He's already placed twice at Minnesota's AA state tournament, finishing fifth as a seventh grader and third as an eighth grader.
It's still early in his career and therefore difficult to project how big Sokol gets, but we have hi as our fifth best prospect at 157 right now. Hawkeye fans can next watch him in action at Super 32 at the end of this month. He's registered to wrestle in what promises to be a loaded 132lb bracket.
