Week 9 Upsets: Midlands Madness!

Markus Hartman Makes His Mark
Army West Point’s Markus Hartman had the most impressive upset performance of the entire Midlands tournament. He made the finals with a number of upsets along the way.
In the round of 16, Hartman took out #6 Quincy Monday of Princeton in a sudden victory thriller, then followed up that performance by pinning #25 Logan Parks of Central Michigan in the quarterfinals.
In the semis, Hartman took out #9 Anthony Artalona of Penn in a wild 9-8 bout. Hartman was completely under the radar before Midlands, but he has clearly announced himself as a top flight 157-pounder this year.
Jaron Jensen Upends #2 Brock Mauller
Wyoming's Jaron Jensen pulled off one of the top upsets of the week in his win over #2 Brock Mauller of Missouri. Mauller was an All-American last year and one of the top contenders for the 149-pound title this year.
Jensen is a second year starter for the Cowboys and was very close to qualifying for the NCAA Championships a season ago. A win like this one over Mauller is a great sign for the Cowboys as they head into the New Year.
Aiello Upsets Warner in Finals Run
Virginia’s Jay Aiello has been ranked as high as ??? this season but entered Midlands ranked 14th after a somewhat disappointing CKLV. He made up for that with a Midlands finals appearance.
Aiello’s biggest win on the weekend came in the semifinals over #2 Jacob Warner of Iowa. That semifinal was action-packed, and Aiello controlled the action late. This was a big win for the Cavalier who is making a push for an All-American finish this year.
DeAugustino Impresses Again at 125
Northwestern’s #11 Michael DeAugustino’s upset run started at CKLV where he beat UNI's Jacob Schwarm, Virginia Tech's Joey Prata, and Michigan's Jack Medley. His breakout season continued at Midlands where he beat #7 Drew Hildebrandt of Central Michigan in the quarterfinals before winning by medical forfeit over Spencer Lee in the semis.
At the beginning of the season, DeAugustino was believed to be Sebastian Rivera’s backup at 125, but now that Rivera has made the move to 133, he and DeAugustino have created a nice 1-2 punch for Northwestern at the top of the lineup. As DeAugustino continues to register upsets, the Rivera move to 133 looks better and better.
Trio for Upsets for Illinois’ Braunagel
Illinos’ 165-pounder Danny Braunagel had a trio of upsets in his impressive Midlands performance. Braunagel, the 11th seed, was not predicted to finish in the top 8 but outpaced his seed to finish 4th.
Braunagel beat #15 Shayne Oster of Northestern in the round of 16, took out #20 Kennedy Monday in the consolation bracket, and had a convincing 10-4 win over #18 Zachary Hartman of Bucnell in the consolation semifinals.
Braunagel’s performance suggests that he may be ready to make a big impact for Illionois at 165 which is encouraging as they head into Big 10 dual season.
Assad Takes Out 3 Ranked Opponents
Iowa’s Abe Assad hasn’t had the chance to be ranked as he is redshirting in his true freshman season. Still, his three ranked wins are worth noting.
Assad entered the tournament as the #11 seed behind two of his teammates. Freshman Nelson Brands was the #2 seed while Senior Cash Wilcke was the #9 seed. But it was Assad who out-place them all, rolling to the finals before falling to #4 Taylor Lujan of UNI.
Assad’s wins came against #19 Travis Stefanik of Princeton, #11 Tanner Harvey of American, and #21 Zach Braunagel of Illinois. Assad is likely to remain in redshirt for the remainder of this season.
Parks Pairs Two Nice Upsets at 157
Central Michigan’s Logan Parks entered Midlands as the 25th ranked wrestler at 157, but he logged upset wins over Penn’s #9 Anthony Artalona and #13 Justin Ruffin of SIUE.
Those wins were good enough for a 5th place performance for Parks who entered the tournament as the number 8 seed. Parks has had a solid season for the Chippewas and continues to improve as the year goes on.
Kizhan Clarke Continues to Climb
American University’s Kizhan Clarke entered Midlands ranked 16th with a ???? record. He had losses to two Hawkeye backups in Jeren Glosser and Vince Turk, but he may have improved his ranking after beating Michigan’s Kanen Storr on the back side of the bracket.
Teague Moore’s American squad has been looking for a leader to emerge, and Clarke just might be that leader. He has set himself up nicely to have a solid season.
Yaraslau Slavikouski Makes Moves at 285
Harvard’s Yaraslau Slavikouski was seeded 11th at Midlands but finished 4th. He out-placed his seed by racking up a couple of upsets over #12 Josh Hokit of Fresno State and #15 Carter Isley of UNI.
Slavikouski represents a Harvard team that seemed to generally wrestle above its seeds at Midlands and has a bright future moving forward.
