Day one at Doc Buchanan has come to a conclusion and the semifinals are set for 10:15am pst Saturday morning. Not everything went as planned on day 1. Here are the top upsets of the day:
106: R32 Lance Johnson, Rocky Mountain default over #19 Eligh Rivera, Lake Highland Prep
After the opening takedown by Rivera it was all Johnson. Johnson scored on several reshot doubles blowing through Rivera to lead 10-4, before the bout was stopped for blood. Eventually Rivera defaulted from the bout after the blood stoppage.
106: R16 Michael Torres, Oakdale dec #4 Tyler Vasquez, Delbarton, 11-9 SV
With a minute to go Torres trailed 7-2 and was on bottom. He rallied for 3 takedowns in the last 25 seconds to send the bout to sudden victory. The last takedown wasn’t without controversy. You can decide for yourself.
113: R16 Yusief Lillie, Tahoma dec #2* Maxximus Martinez, St. John Bosco, 5-2
Lillie had a huge third period scoring and escape, takedown and a set of two nearfall to take the 5-2 victory over the highly touted freshman.
145: R16 Andrew Troczinski, Delbarton dec #10 Joseph Zargo, Bergen Catholic, 7-4
Troczinski opened the bout with a takedown in just five seconds and never relinquished the lead.
152: R16 Nate Camisciolli, Bergen Catholic dec #7 Noah Castillo, Lake Highland Prep 4-3
Camisciolli made the drop to 152lbs and is making the most of his opportunity on the west coast.
145: Quarterfinal Logan Gioffre, Buchanan dec #12 Fidel Mayora, Montini Catholic, 3-2 TB
Gioffre scored a reversal in tiebreaker to move onto the semifinals. Mayora flirted with making the upset list in the round of 16, but was able to stay alive earning a tiebreaker victory. Gioffre was able to close the door on the Montini senior.
