Friday night's matchup between #1 Vincenzo Joseph and #2 Alex Marinelli will be one of the most important matches of the dual. It's also one of the most intriguing matchups as Cenzo's two NCAA titles and three NCAA finals appearances outshine Marinelli's sixth- and seventh-place performances, while Marinelli is 2-0 against Cenzo.
Cenzo and Marinelli have wrestled for a combined 14 minutes. In the first five minutes they wrestled, Cenzo outscored Marinelli 5-2. In the last nine minutes, Marinelli has outscored Cenzo 16-4.
Their first meeting, at a 2018 dual in State College, was one-sided in Vincenzo Joseph's favor through the first two periods, but in the third, Marinelli took Joseph to his back with a body lock, a six-point move that gave him the win.
Marinelli used the body lock for six again in their rematch in the finals at last hear's Big Ten Championships. This position is not particularly common in matches between top-ranked foes, but it has been responsible for most of the points between these two.
Given Marinelli's success from the body lock, it makes sense that Cenzo might try to avoid this position in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday night. Vincenzo Joseph has proven nearly impossible to take down against most opponents, and his NCAA finals wins over Isaiah Martinez demonstrate that he knows how to reverse results against even the best opponents. Still, Marinelli has been better in their previous two meetings.
Penn State's path to victory against Iowa all but requires Vincenzo Joseph to solve the Alex Marinelli puzzle in one of the most anticipated rematches of the entire NCAA season.
