The PIAA Individual State Championships were loaded with head-to-head showdowns between ranked wrestlers which led to more incredible matches than we could count. Here are 10 of the best matches we could find.
160 AA: #5 Thayne Lawrence vs #4 Andrew Cerniglia
This was one of the most highly anticipated matches of the whole AA tournament. Thayne Lawrence entered the event ranked #5 in the country, and Andrew Cerniglia just ahead of him at #4. One of the things that made this match incredible was the crowd engagement. If you haven't seen this one yet, do yourself a favor and check it out.
138 AAA: #12 Wyatt Henson vs #11 Sammy Hillegas
Hillegas and Henson had split matches heading into their state final at 138, so who would get it done with everything on the line? This was, in many ways, the main event on Saturday night, and it delivered.
145 AA: #16 Erik Gibson vs Gavin D'Amato
Erik Gibson had an eventful tournament, knocking off #15 Avery Bassett in the round of 16. He was favored in this semifinal, but D'Amato was ready. This was incredible.
152 AAA: #2 Ed Scott vs #7 Cameron Robinson
Ed Scott had seemed untouchable heading into his final with Cameron Robinson. He won by major decision in the semifinals and won the 27 matches before that by fall. Despite his dominance, Cameron Robinson was up for the challenge, and these two put on a show that looked more like a match at NCAAs than a match at a high school state tournament.
113 AA: #4 Brett Ungar vs #5 Gary Steen
Wrestling fans around the country were looking forward to this grudge match between Brett Ungar and Gary Steen. Not much separated these two, and they needed extra time to break the tie.
106 AAA Vinny Kilkeary vs Jake Vandee
The opening match of the AAA finals set the tone for a night of incredible action. Kilkeary and Vandee both had amazing semifinals to make it to this match, and their final had a dramatic ending.
170 AAA #12 Lenny Pinto vs #8 Mac Stout
Lenny Pinto and Mac Stout navigated the bracket of death to make it to the finals at AAA 170. You might expect people in that position to hold back. They didn't. This was one of the wildest, back-and-forth affairs of the whole tournament.
106 AA Jaden Pepe vs Kane Kettering
One of the most exciting matches of the AA tournament was also one of the first. Jaden Pepe and Kane Kettering had a thriller that came down to the final seconds. This match was awesome!
132 AAA #15 Patrick Noonan vs #10 Alejandro Herrera-Rondon
This AAA semifinal between ranked opponents was action-packed, and it went all the way to ultimate tie breakers. This might have been the most exciting match in one of the most loaded brackets at PIAAs.
160 AAA #16 Clayton Ulrey vs #9 Luke Nichter
This was one of the most surprising matches of the AAA finals. Most people expect matches between ranked opponents to be tightly contested. This one got blown wide open!
