Day two has begun here in Ottawa. A dozen spots in the Olympics are up for grabs in women's freestyle at the Pan American Qualifier.
We're starting off with 76kg, a weight that America has already qualified for. The first match of the day is Olympic gold medalist Erica Wiebe of Canada and world silver medalist Aline da Silva Ferreira of Brazil. A second period takedown and Wiebe takes the 2-1 decision to keep her Olympic qualifying hopes alive in her home country. According to a Team Canada coach she actually grew up not too far from the Shaw Centre where this is being held, about 20-25 minutes.
Match 1: 57kg - Helen Maroulis vs Linda Morais (CAN)
The Olympic gold medalist is back folks. Her coach Jon Morrison said the weight cut was easy and she looked to be in good spirits with high energy in this morning's warm up. No points 40 seconds in, but they trade passives. Takedown Helen! She had the 2019 world champ at 59kg in trouble, but Morais bellies out. Back up to their feet, 4:33 to go. Maroulis contact pops out.
Helen working the two-on-one well, taking ground on Morais. The Canadian forces her into the zone and into short offense, but Helen peaks out and gets another takedown. Coach Morrison wanted a lace but Morais fought it off quickly.
Back to action in the second, Morais trying to use an underhook, but throwby and two for Maroulis. She leads 6-0 with 2:22 left. Morrison wants more fakes and to move her in space, stay out of the Canadian's ties. Takedown Helen, leads 8-0 with 2:07 to go.
Takedown Morais on a crackdown. Morrison throws the cube, which appears to be a dumbbell, but Helen waves it off. Morais in on a shot, fighting it off in the zone and a beautiful cross pick! She finishes it with Morais on her back for a 12-2 tech.
Match 2: 62kg - Kayla Miracle vs Nathaly Josefina GRIMAN HERRERA (VEN)
Passive called at 5:12. Cameraman was blocking my way but I think Kayla hit her DeSanot dump. Reversing the bar and Kayla gets the fall!
Match 3: 53kg - Jacarra Winchester vs Lianna de la Caridad MONTERO HERRERA (CUB)
Rubber match here, and a very obvious body contrast. Jacarra looks long and lean while Montero Herrera is compact and strong. Bodylock for the Cuban but immediate whizzer and square up by Winchester. Montero hit for passive, 5:11 to go. Montero working a two-on-one and Jacarra hit for passive. Cuba on the clock and Jacarra digs an underhook. Throws it by, snags the ankle and takedown Jacarra on the edge, just over two minutes in.
Really impressive closed ties from Winchester, she has really been controlling those well and limiting Montero's opportunities, 2-0 at the break. Back to action and the Cuban throws an immediate whizzer. Low level leg attack and she takes a 4-0 lead, then her trademark high gut and it's 6-0 with 2:15 left.
Jacara keeping her pace, ref admonishes her. Goes into a two-on-one. The Cuban looks to be waiting for an attack from the American which probably won't come. Attention against Jacarra. A late takedown and it got scary for a second as Montero fell into a lace, but the world champ kept her legs together and never got turned. She holds on to win 6-2.
Match 4: 62kg - Kayla Miracle vs Alejandra ROMERO BONILLA (MEX)
Second match of the pool for Kayla after picking up a pin in her first match. Wearing the red singlet with Mark Perry in her corner. A few fakes by Miracle and passive confirmed against Mexico at 5:10. Downblock for Miracle and both are on their knees. Mexico tries pulling her into short offense, stalemated at 4:30. Mexico goes on the clock. Kayla takes a 1-0 lead. Coach Perry wants her to attack in the finals 30 seconds of the period, but it ends still 1-0.
Just handfighting in the first 30 seconds of the second period. Ref looking to hit someone for passive as Romero pulls Kayla into a front head. Swing single, big time treetop and Kayla leads 3-0 but can't quite get her lace cinched up. Final 90 seconds now and the Mexican coaches want a passive. Kayla goes on the clock. First point for Romero, Kayla dives under. Now fighting off a chin whip and Kayla powers through for another takedown. That should seal up the 5-1 win.
Match 5: 57kg - Helen Maroulis vs Giullia RODRIGUES PENALBER DE OLIVEIRA (BRA)
Helen taking on the top seed at her weight. Shoots her out but they call grounded. Takedown gets waved off, Brazil goes on the clock. 18 seconds in and the entire arena just went silent as Helen is clearly hurt. The medical staff is out checking on her, appears to a be a leg injury. Scary momeny, but she's fine. Clock expires and Helen immediately fires off a double to take a 3-0 lead. Back on their feet, 3:40 to go. That's how the first period will end.
Two-on-one and both are head-to-head on their knees. Blown dead, 2:26 remaining. Arm throw attempt from Brazil, but Helen was ready and lands behind her for two. Right into a gut wrench to lead 7-0. Continues trying that back bow but no go. She's up 7-0 with 1:47 left. Another takedown, blocked by the cameraman. 9-0 with just over a minute left. Final minute now and Helen drops into a shot, fought off though. Final 30 seconds and Helen is waiting for Rodrigues to come to her. She wins 9-0 and will be in the semis later today.
Match 6: 50kg - Sarah Hildebrandt vs Rita Fatima ROJAS CHAVEZ (MEX)
Quarterfinal match here. Rojas Chavez won Cadet Pan Ams in 2015 and was bronze at Juniors in 2018. The winner will face Jessica MacDonald in the semis. Sarah in the blue here with her tiny kneepad on her right knee. Hildebrandt pulls her into short offense and then hits her throwby. Right into a lace, Mexico fighting hard but she makes it 8-0 before the Mexican goes out of bounds. Fake into front head and dresser dump finishes it off.
Match 7: 62kg - Jackeline RENTERIA CASTILLO (COL)
Miracle vs the three-time Olympian. Head outside single and stalemated. Miracle with a 12-0 win over Castillo in the finals of last year's Pan Am Games. Colombia goes on the clock. Miracle with the 1-0 lead and is being very patient today. Foot sweep attempt by Renteria off the underhook. Great finish by Kayla! Got to rear standing, finished the takedown and gutted her right before time expired.
Sprawl by Miracle as Renteria shoots off the whistle. She works into a cradle and finishes the takedown but transitions into a gut. Works for several seconds to finish it and that's it! She's in the semis.
Match 8: 57kg - Helen Maroulis vs Lissette Alexandra ANTES CASTILLO (ECU)
Final match of pool play. Ecaudor coming after Helen right away, but the American taking back ground in the handfight. Passive against Antes Castillo with 5:19 to go. Jon Morrison wants her to pick up the pace. Antes on the clock. First point on the board for Helen as she keeps tying up the Ecuadorian's wrists. On their knees, Helen comes into short offense. Antes tries a drag but Helen catches an ankle and leads 3-0 as the go out of bounds. Quick shot and score by Castillo. The period ends 3-2 in favor of Maroulis.
Right back to the handfight in the second. Attention against Ecuador for hands to the face. Helen trying to find her way to a two-on-one and drives Castillo out of bounds, 4-2 lead with 2:11 to go. Final 90 seconds now and Helen is hanging on a collar tie. Two-on-one, drag to the mat, reach around and finishes to the mat, 6-2 lead. Restart with 47 seconds left. Antes Castillo reaching but Helen is too quick.
Match 9: 53kg - Jacarra Winchester vs Zeltzin HERNANDEZ GUERRA (MEX)
Jacarra with two different colored kneepads. Short offense, catches and ankle, and runs out of room for her high gut. Nice low ankle by Guerra, quick response from Jacarra, trying to stuff the head and run behind. Back up to their feet, no points. Violent knee pick from Jacarra and Hernandez's face broke her fall. Hard snap, into an arm drag, cathes the tricep and puts the Mexican on her back but only two. Jacarra fighting off a shot now.
6-0 coming back. And that's a four off an underhook to finish it off.
Match 10: 50kg - Sarah Hildebandt vs Jessica MacDonald (CAN)
Big one here, semi to qualify. Passive against MacDonald, 5:17 to go. The Canadian trying to tie her up, but cleared out. Sarah immediately back on her and taking ground. Passive confirmed, red's on the clock with 4:42 to go. Hard fake by MacDonald, Sarah doesn't bite. 1-0 lead after the clock runs out. Sarah holding position really well and catches the ankle! High finish, trying to out her on her back! Lacing her and that's it! Sarah Hildebrandt has qualified 50kg for the Olympics for America and sits in the Trials finals.
Match 11: 62kg - Kayla Miracle vs Michelle FAZZARI (CAN)
Crazy important match. Fazzari does have a win over Miracle from a few years back. Staying in the center the first 51 seconds, passive against Miracle. Ear to ear, not much happening. Miracle on the clock at 4:45. Fazzari takes a 1-0 lead but Kayla has been slow playing first periods all day. Passive against Fazzari. Neither wrestler able to do much to create an angle or an opening. Fireman's! And she leads 2-1. Kayla trying to run a gut wrench but defended, score stays the same at the break.
Shot by Kayla, working a headwheel, and she exposes FAzzari for 2. Still in on the shot, and Fazzari is holding on. The Americans want another two for exposure, and she gets it! 6-1 lead now and Rich Bender is screaming "SETTLE THERE SETTLE THERE!" Another turn and it's 8-1, but Canada is challenging. Extended review here. They go 2 red, 2 blue, 2 red. Canada gets the brick back and it's 6-3 now. 1:50 to go and Fazzari picks up her pace. Trying to fight off a front headlock. Blown dead 1:17 to go. Shot on Fazzari's left leg, the Canadian is trying to break the lock but Kayla puts her on her back! 8-3 now. Back on their feet 36 to go. Beautiful go behind to ice it, 10-3 and Kayla qualifies her weight for the Olympics! She'll be in the Trails finals as well.
Match 12: 57kg - Helen Maroulis vs Nes Marie RODRIGUEZ TIRADO (PUR)
Right away Helen gets after it, single for two on the edge and a gut wrench out of bounds to make it 4-0. Back to her two-on-one looking for a foot sweep. Smart edge wrestling by Helen to force the stepout, looks like she wanted a Dresser Dump. Continuing to attack that left leg of Rodriguez, grounded in the zone and no points. Helen fighting with an overhook, hard whizzer as Rodriguez tries to table the shot. Helen looking for a cross pick, Puerto Rico tries a headlock. Comes back to her feet and Helen drags her toes on a shot to make but only a stepout. Drag to go behind, 8-0 now. Snap to shot and that's it! Clean 10-0 tech and Helen is back in the Trials finals, that's three weights qualified.
Match 13: 53kg - Jacarra Winchester vs Samantha STEWART (CAN)
Last match of the session for Team USA. Double in the first 10 seconds, that's been unstoppable for her today.Goofy situation on top but no turn. Stewart trying to slow the pace down now. BOOM! Another huge double and it's 4-0 now. Both wrestlers shoot and both wrestlers counter, but it's Stewart coming out on top to make it 4-2. at the break.
Knee pick in the second and Jacarra's up 6-2 now. Works her high gut and 8-2 now. Jacarra got to rear standing but couldn't finish. Big lift for Stewart and it's 8-4 in the final minute. Winchester holds on and USA does it! All four weights are qualified.
All four athletes did not wrestle in their finals.
