2020 Pan Am Olympic Qualifier: Men's Freestyle Updates + Results

The third and final day of competition has come at the Shaw Centre, and we're closing out with men's freestyle.

So far, Team USA has qualified four weights per day, getting four out of six through in Greco and each of the women's freestyle wrestlers winning their semifinals yesterday.

Wrestling today for America are Thomas Gilman at 57kg, Zain Retherford at 65kg, David Taylor at 86kg, and Nick Gwiazdowski at 125kg. Brackets can be found here.

Results by weight will be at the bottom.

Match 1: 65kg - Zain Retherford vs Jose Rodriguez (PUR)

Retherford and Rodriguez are on deck on Mat B following Amar Dhesi.

Jose Rodriguez, representing Puerto Rico, used to be a 125-pounder for Ohio State. Zain in on the shot early, gets the exposure but Rodrigeuz is still hanging on his left ankle. Another two for exposure as Zain rolls him, and into a lace makes it 6-0. Zain figure fours the leg but back up to their feet, 4:46 left. Zain back in on the left leg, splitting the middle, very close to an exposure. Zain slowly works his way up, Rodriguez back to the mat on both hands and a gut finishes it off! 10-0 tech in 2:16.

Match 2: 57kg - Thomas Gilman vs Ligrit Sadiku (CAN)

Sadiku was a surprise winner at Canadian Olympic Trials, defeating multiple time age level world team member Darthe Capellan. It is the only pigtail match in the 57kg bracket. Sadiku has competed twice this year, finishing fifth at the Henri Deglane in France and fifth at last week's Pan Am championships.

And we're off, trademark hard collar ties from Gilman early. Gilman gets to his lefty underhook, Sadkiu drops to a knee in the zone. Gilman tries shelfing it but no points as they go out of bounds. Somehow despite controlling center and forcing Sadiku to the edge USA gets hit for passive. Gilman responds by shooting him out. Another underhook and he shelfs the leg earlier this time. Ref calls 2, judge calls 1, chairman calls for a conference. No points, score remains 1-0.

Gilman has a clear horsepower advantage, another lefty underhook and gets him out before he can ground, 2-0 now. Single leg by Gilman, pretty quick finish, 4-0 lead now as the Canadian's head touches out. Snap to go behind, Gilman circles right and guts him to go from 6-0 to 8-0. Another gut a few seconds later and he wins 10-0! Up next is a quarterfinal with Reineri Andreu Ortega of Cuba, who defeated Gilman 7-4 at the 2018 Pan Am championships.

Match 3: 125kg - Nick Gwiazdowski vs Charles Zachary Merrill (PUR)

Gwizdowski up against Merrill, who is American. Right before that former Oregon State All-American Amar Dhesi picked up a 10-0 tech over Canada. Single from Gwiz, headwheel and Merrill lands on his back to make it 4-0. Gwiz gets two on exposure, was blocked so couldn't see how. Back on their feet up 6-0 with 5:20 left. Single to right leg, takedown and Gwiz working a lace which he picks up Dave Schultz style to finish with authority!

Alejandro Valdes Tobier (CUB) up on Mat B against Mexico. Takedown in 5 seconds and this is gonna be ugly, his gut is excellent. That's a 10-0 tech in 18 seconds.

There is a Venezuelan with a fantastic mullet here. Former Michigan State wrestler Angus Arthur is up on Mat A against Barbados at 86kg. He picks up a fall in 46 seconds for Jamaica. Following that up is Reineris Salas Perez of Cuba against Joe Daniel Diaz Robertti of Venezuela at 97kg. This is Salas' second match of the day. He has a full red arm sleeve on his right arm and his wrist/hand is heavily taped. Salas wins 12-1 on a series of gut wrenches and Diaz looks badly hurt.

Match 4: 65kg - Zain Retherford vs Uber Euclides CUERO MUNOZ (COL)

Zain will have his quarterfinal match before David Taylor wrestles his first match of the day. Cuero was at 57kg as recently as the 2017 Pan Am championships. Here we go. Win here and he's one victory away from qualifying the weight and guaranteeing top seed at Olympic Trials.

Low shot right away and quick finish. In great position for a lace and he turns him twice. Readjusts and angles back toward the center. That's a 10-0 tech in just 25 seconds.

Right after, Nestor Taffur picked up a first period pin at 74kg to advance to the semis. Over on Mat B, Zain's Nittany Lion WC teammate Franklin Gomez is facing Canada. An amazing side arch for four gives Gomez a 5-0 lead at the break. Canada fighting his way back in and makes it 9-3, but just 1:14 to go. We've got a match here folks! Phulka puts Gomez on his back but they only call two, challenge Canada. Looked like a clear four to me, but Canada loses the challenge. Gomez shoots but Phulka cirlces behind, 10-7 now. Tight win by Franklin, who will have Nestor to qualify the weight.

Ethan Ramos up 4-3 on Yuriesk Torreblanca Queralta (CUB) late, but gets crotch lifted for two and will lose 5-4. Puerto Rico is challenging.

Match 5: 86kg - David Taylor vs Pedro Francisco CEBALLOS FUENTES (VEN)

He's back, folks. Taylor is hyped! Immediately looking for snaps against the Olympic fifth placer in 2016 from Venezuela. The activity level is high for Taylor early. Passive against Ceballos with 5:13 left. Fuentes shoots, Taylor locks through the crotch. Venezuela coming up through the middle. Taylor in a far ankle scramble and stalemated, 4:32 left. Venezuela on the clock at 4:23. Taylor shoots, Ceballos fights back, stepout. Chairman calls for a conference. They added the point for the shot clock. Taylor shoots, head in between, Ceballos tries to chest wrap but he bellies out. 4-0 David with 3:20 left. Another shot, chasing the left leg but nothing. Second shot, forces him out and the period ends 5-0.

Second period, double right away, switches off to single but whizzer to overhook and Ceballos squares up. Another double and DT shoots him out. Taylor shooting on the right leg, stopped for a second but headwheel and it's 8-0 now. Still the same non stop shooting Taylor and he closes it out 10-0! DT wins his first match back. He'll face Yurieski Torreblanca Queralta of Cuba in the semis, winner qualifies their country for the Games. Looks like they are technically crediting him with a fall.

Over on A, Angus Arthur was up 10-3 but screams out in pain. He seems badly hurt, knee injury. Arthur decides to continue but Argentina tries to throw Arthur off the stage and the Michigan native is understandably furious. Arthur holds on to win 11-7, not sure how Argentina didn't get thrown out there though.

Match 6: 57kg - Thomas Gilman vs Reineri Andreu Ortega (CUB)

Revenge time. Hard clubs from Gilman early trying to set the tone. Andreu in deep. Gilman fights in a quad pod for a wile, but Andreu scores. Working on a leg lace now bur can't get it. 2-0 Andreu. Gilman takes Andreu to the edge and off, but Andreu gets grounded at the last second. No score. To the edge again, but this time Gilman gets the point. 2-1 Andreu. Now Andreu gets in deep on a dingle. Takes Gilman off the mat, but in a quad pod. Add one for Andreu, it's now 3-1. 50 seconds left 1st period. Gilman taking Andreu light to the edge again. Now working from a head-pinch. Gilman works to score from an underhoook but can't do it as time expires in the first. He trails 3-1.

Second Period: Gilman used an underhook to take Andreu to the edge. 1 point for the stepout. He needs at least 2 to lead. 1 won't do it because of criteria. 2 minutes left. Great short-offense sequence for Gilman. Goes one way then the other to get the takedown. Now leads 4-3. 1:15 left. Gilman holds on for the 4-3 win. That's huge! Needs to win in the semis to qualify team USA.

Match 7: 125kg - Nick Gwiazdowski vs Angel Pacheco Romero (CUB)

Gwiazdowski wins by injury default.

Match 8: 57kg - Thomas Gilman vs Juan Ramirez Betre (DOM)

This is a match to qualify the US for an Olympic Spot at 57kg. Attention for Ramirez early as Gilman is controlling center. And now Ramirez is on the shot clock. The shot clock expires, and Gilman is on the board 1-0. Now Gilman drops in on a head inside single, brings the action to his feat, and gets a takedown out of bounds. Ramirez challenges. Wanted Gilman to have 1 for the stepout instead of 2 for the takedown. 41 seconds left in the period. Gilman gets a point for the failed challenge. It's 4-0. Tack on another for a stepout and it's 5-0 with 12 seconds left in the first. That's how the period will end.

Second Period: Gilman with a quick takedown about 30 seconds into the second goes up 7-0. Gets a nice gutwrench on the edge and goes up 9-0! Finishes another single, and that's it. 11-0 tech for Gilman, and he qualifies the US for the Olympics!

Match 9: 65kg - Zain Retherford vs Agustin Destribats (ARG)

This is a match to qualify the US for an Olympic Spot at 65kg. Retherford comes out handfighting hard (of course). Deep double for Retherford, but Destribat catches him. He's close to the fall. Zain had the takedown, but Destribat wrestled through the position and got the fall. As Retherford attempted his lace after the takedown, Destribat recovered on top, then settled in to earn the fall. The US is not qualified for the Olympics at 65kg.

Match 10: 86kg - David Taylor vs Yurieski Torreblanca Queralta (CUB)

This is a match to qualify the US for an Olympic Spot at 86kg. Taylor has had close matches with Torreblanca in the past, but he has always won. Action stopped for the finger fight early in the first period. Action call goes against Torreblanca. Now he's on the shot clock. Shot clock expires, and Taylor is up 1-0. Taylor elevates the leg and gets a step out. He's up 2-0. Snap for Torreblanca, but Taylor with a nice re-attack to earn the takedown. He's up 4-0 late in the first. Taylor in deep on a shot but unable to score as time expires. Still 4-0 headed into the second.

Second Period: First minute is slow in terms of action. Taylor warned for passivity. Both guys have taken low-risk attacks. Taylor finally drops in on a single. He's locked on it, but action stalls. Back to our feet with 30 seconds left. Torreblanca attacks, but Taylor counters for 2 then adds 2 more with a leg lace. He wins this 8-0. Very impressive win for DT to qualify the weight!

Match 11: 125kg - Nick Gwiazdowski vs Luis Vivenes Urbaneja (VEN)

This is a match to qualify the US for an Olympic Spot at 125kg. Here we go. Last match of the session. Gwiz in on a shot, but the official stops it for some reason. Really good attack that just got stopped. The commentary team says it's a paperwork issue. Gwiz in on a high single, collects the second ankle and gets the 2. Add a turn, and he's up 4-0 just a minute into the match. 4 point takedown for Gwiz! Looked for a gut, but it wasn't there. He's up 8-0. Another takedown, and that will do it. Gwiz qualifies the weight with a tech in 1:41!

Medal matches

Thomas Gilman wins GOLD via forfeit.

Match 12: 65kg Zain Retherford vs Albaro Rudesindo (DOM)

Sweep single for two and Zain goes up early with a takedown. Slides in a leg ride but can't get a turn. Another good low-level shot but by Zain but Rudesindo jumps out of danger. A short scramble, Rudesindo briefly had one of Zain's legs but we're back in neutral, no scores. Anther shot by Retherford and Rudesindo can't escape this time. Two more for Zain, who locks up a leg lace and gets two more turns out of it for an 8-0 lead. Zain in on another shot, Rudesindo trying to counter, but he ends up on his back, and Retherford picks up a fall for extra classification points!

Zain Retherford wins a BRONZE medal!

David Taylor wins GOLD via injury default over Pool Ambrocio (PER).

Nick Gwiazdowski wins GOLD via forfeit.

And that does it. Three gold and a bronze for the four American men's freestyle competitors.
