Prior to his time at the HWC, Perry was the assistant coach at the University of Illinois. Perry was credited with recruiting and developing eventual two-time national champions Jesse Delgado and Isaiah Martinez for the Illini.

As a competitor, Perry was a four-time All-American and two-time national champion for Iowa. He won NCAA titles at 165 pounds as a junior and as a senior in 2007 and 2008 after placing second as a freshman in 2005 and third as a sophomore in 2006 at 174 pounds.
