How Long Is The High School Season?
How Long Is The High School Season?
Does wrestling season ever end? Not really.
Does wrestling season ever end? Not really.
Understandably so, COVID-19 may have brought us our first ending, but let’s be honest, wrestling season never truly ends. We go from folkstyle season straight into freestyle/Greco season – with some overlap, of course. But if we suss things out the high school wrestling season starts in late November with the first competition coming in the first week of December.
There's a slight break for Thanksgiving, where we get to be a spectator for our family’s plate stacking, and Christmas, when we are granted a two-pound weight allowance – with the exception of a few states like California, which gets theirs closer to the New Year. The season continues until March where teams and individual state champions are crowned to cap off the regular season.
Currently, only a few states sanction girls wrestling at the high school level which coincides with the male season. To use California again, which has one of the better (if not, the best) female wrestling structure in place with the culmination of their season taking place alongside their male counterparts. Hopefully more states adopt this structure.
In short, the regular season begins in late November and finishes in March. But let’s be honest, the best in the country never stop sharpening their tools as they compete in freestyle and Greco when folkstyle is on a break.
