There’s been a lot of speculation — probably by me more than anyone else — about the Oklahoma State lineup for next season. There’s been a lot of speculation — probably by me more than anyone else — about the Oklahoma State lineup for next season. The Cowboys have some interesting spots, especially with all the firepower coming in with this year’s recruiting class and the return of Kaid Brock and Boo Lewallen, who both received sixth years after injuries.

The first question John Smith was asked on the call was who he sees as his starting lineup, and this is what he laid out.

125-Trevor Mastrogiovanni, Reece Witcraft, or Jakason Burks

Coach Smith laid out these three as the three projected to hash it out to start at this weight class. True freshmen Trevor Mastrogiovanni and Jakason Burks will both be at 125 and Witcraft will be making a move down from 133, where he was the starter last season to contend for 125.

133-Daton Fix with one of Burks, Witcraft or Mastro filling in until Fix gets back

Smith stated that when Fix returns from suspension, this will be his weight class. But until that point it will be one of the three contenders for 125 bumping up to fill in here.

141-Dusty Hone or Kaid Brock

This one could be interesting. Oklahoma State fans are excited about the return of two-time All American Kaid Brock, but Dusty Hone is no slouch and put together a nice little season as the starter at 141 last season.

The starters at the next three weights barring injury are “locked in” according to Smith.

149-Boo Lewallen

I don’t think there was much doubt that this is Boo’s spot this season, but the interesting note about this weight is Smith did say Kaden Gfeller will be here backing up Boo instead of contending for 141.

157-Wyatt Sheets

Another locked-in starter is Wyatt Sheets here. Smith mentioned Jalin Harper and Daniel Manibog as backups.

165-Travis Wittlake

Another spot where I don’t think there was much doubt was here with Wittlake. The only intrigue was if he might possibly outgrow the weight, which doesn’t seem to be the case.

Here’s where it starts to get interesting. In Smith’s words “it is wide open” from 174 on.

174-Dustin Plott or Anthony Montalvo

It sounds like Montalvo will be trying to make the cut to 174 to contend with superstar true freshman Dustin Plott for the starting spot there. It doesn’t sound like he’s solidly down to weight yet, but is on his way to try. If he can’t pull off 174 he will be moving up to contend for 184.

184-Dakota Geer or Anthony Montalvo

All-American Dakota Geer is returning to 184. If Montalvo can’t make 174 he will contend with Geer for the job at 184.

197-AJ Ferrari

Smith said if healthy, true freshman AJ Ferrari will be the starter at 197.

285-Austin Harris

It sounds like heavyweight is still a bit up in the air, but according to Smith, Harris looks to have that spot at this point. He didn’t make any mention of transfer Shawn Streck, who has been around the program some, but has not officially been added to the roster yet.
