By Taylor Miller-Gregorio, USA Wrestling - Adeline Gray, the first five-time World champion in USA Wrestling history, has announced that she will supplement her training for the Olympic Games at the Beaver Dam Regional Training Center alongside the Oregon State wrestling program in Corvallis, Oregon. She will also continue training at the US Olympic and Paralympic Training Center.

“I’m excited to see the Pacific Northwest, and I’m looking forward to the support from the program,” Gray said. “Oregon State is making big moves and investing in women, and it’s awesome to feel wanted and feel like others value you. RTC programs have been funding men for a long time now, and it’s exciting that women now get to benefit from that and the coaching resources.”

Gray is the second women’s freestyle addition to the squad as last month, the Beaver Dam RTC announced two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe to its RTC roster. In addition to Lampe, Gray joins an RTC that already features two-time NCAA champion and Final X runner-up Isaiah Martinez as well as three-time U.S. Open placewinner Mike Kosoy. Martinez is also on the Oregon State staff as an assistant coach.

“We are excited to add five-time World champion and Olympian Adeline Gray to the Beaver Dam RTC,” Oregon State assistant coach Nate Engel said. “One big thing that Head Coach Chris Pendleton wanted to have when he got to Corvallis was an inclusive RTC, supporting all the international styles. We want to have the best athletes here in Corvallis training to win World and Olympic medals. Adeline is one of the biggest advocates in our sport, and I have had the pleasure of working with Adeline for the last year and half and it’s been a lot of fun. To be able to have her around our student athletes and share her knowledge is priceless. We can’t wait to help her achieve her goal of becoming an Olympic champion.”

In the last year, Gray, a 2016 Olympian and 2020 Olympic hopeful, split her time between the United States Olympic Training Center and the California Regional Training Center, which was part of the Stanford wrestling program. While at Stanford, she was under the guidance of Engel, who was an assistant coach there at the time.

Gray continues her training with Engel, who was named the Assistant Coach at Oregon State in March.

“Nate has been awesome. I’ve been looking for a coach that could be in my corner full time,” Gray said. “ Terry Steiner has always been my guy, but there are certain events, like Olympic Trials and domestic events that he can’t be in my corner for, so I reached out to Nate and he’s been very willing to work with me to figure out what is best for my career and keep in mind my long-term goals. During the pandemic, he really stepped up from doing Zoom practices to coming to camps when they were safely available. He’s made me feel cared for as his athlete.”

"Adeline is a winner and to have someone in your program that exudes the confidence and the ability to win is an atmosphere that every program strides for,” Engel said. “Just having her in the room with seven world medals—five of them gold—will make us stronger. Our athletes are striving for one championship and we get to have an athlete of her caliber guide us and allow us to support her in her bid for the Olympic Games. It’s just awesome."
