Jimmie Bowers looked at the bumps, bruises and bandages on the California women’s freestyle bench and saw the mark of a title-winning roster.

At the end of the Junior National Duals, the Californians might have absorbed some physical damage, but they dished out far more than they took.

California completed its demolition of the women’s freestyle field on Thursday by cruising to four more runaway wins in the Gold/Silver pool competition, including a 38-22 victory against reigning champion Illinois.

In all, California went 82-30 in matches and outscored its eight opponents by a combined 380-136 count.

“They’re all pretty banged up,” Bowers said. “They’ve got bumps, bruises, knees taped, shoulders taped, hands taped, busted eyes. But those are the signs of true champions.”

California raced out to a 21-1 lead against Illinois in the showcase dual of the tournament when Maliya Castillo and America Lopez registered falls, Sam Calkins and Madison Avila notched technical superiority victory and Kiely Tabaldo scored a 9-2 win against second-ranked Mia Palumbo.

California finished off its title chase by collecting nine match wins in a 44-22 victory against Texas Black.
