25 Big Upsets In Week 15

The past week of college wrestling saw a number of notable upsets including 8 top ten wrestlers falling to lower-ranked opponents. Take a look below at a breakdown of the biggest matches along with a full list of upsets from the past week.

Teske Uses Wizardry To Upset Terukina

#15 Brody Teske has had an up-and-down season and faced a rising #15 Kysen Terukina on Friday night. Entering the dual, Terukina was coming off back-to-back wins over top 10 ranked wrestlers - Killian Cardinale and Trevor Mastrogiovanni. In their match on Friday, Terukina was in control early and took a 2-1 lead into the second period. Teske, however, took control of the match in the second frame using an escape and scoring one of the most incredible takedowns of the season. Teske took that momentum into the third by tacking on another takedown and defeating Terukina 6-3. Take a look at the full match below.

Foley Doubles Up

Rayvon Foley hasn’t achieved All-American status since 2019. However, Foley looks poised to reach the top 8 of the podium this year - especially after this past weekend. On Friday, Foley took out returning All-American #8 Chris Cannon in a 6-2 victory. He followed that victory up with a 7-2 win over #7 Dylan Ragusin on Sunday. With those wins, Foley moved to 24-2 on the season and will likely receive a high seed at the upcoming Big 10 Tournament.

Millner Ends Heil’s Run At Perfection

Jonathan Millner and Josh Heil squared off in a top 10 match-up in Boone, North Carolina on Sunday. Along with this being a top 10 match-up, Heil was undefeated on the season with ranked wins over #5 Austin Gomez, #16 Zach Sherman, and #21 Jarod Verkleeren. After a takedown in the first period by Heil, Millner escaped making the score 2-1 going into the second. Millner had choice in the second and again escaped to tie the match at 2 going into the third. In the final frame, Heil had his choice and started underneath Millner. Despite numerous close escapes, Millner gritted out a full ride-earning a riding time point and a 3-2 victory over Heil.

Trumble Stays Undefeated Against Bonaccorsi

Last season, Nino Bonaccorsi was an NCAA runner-up and had only two losses on the year - one in the finals to AJ Ferrari and the other to Isaac Trumble. In their dual on Friday night, Trumble was able to get the better of Bonaccorsi again in a 2-0 victory. Trumble rode Bonaccorsi out in the second period and escaped in the third for the only points in the match. In the third period, Bonaccorsi got to Trumble’s legs multiple times but wasn’t able to finish due to Trumble’s savvy defense. Trumble has put together a great season and looks ready to challenge the best in the country at 197 pounds.

Cochran Is Back On Track

Kyle Cochran was one of the biggest stories coming out of the Southern Scuffle where he took home first place and had ranked wins over #14 Jonathan Loew, HM Jeremiah Kent, and #10 Hunter Bolen. On Saturday, Cochran took the mat against returning All-American #8 John Poznanski in a highly entertaining bout. Cochran took control of the match early and held a 2-1 lead going into the second period. Poznanski would strike back with a reversal to take his first lead of the match. However, from that point on Cochran controlled the rest of the match with an escape, takedown, and rideout to take a 5-3 lead into the third period. In the final frame, Cochran earned a quick escape and tacked on another takedown to extend his lead over Poznanski. Ultimately, Cochran won the match in a controlling, 9-5 victory. The win over Poznanski marked Cochran’s first win against ranked opponents since January 21st (when he defeated #17 Donnell Washington) and ended a 4 match losing streak against ranked opponents.
