The Best Matches From Day One At The Iowa High School State Tournament
Hundreds of matches happened on day one inside Wells Fargo Arena. These are the ones you have to see.
A lot of matches went down inside Wells Fargo Arena on Thursday. Here were some of the ones you have to see.
3A
126 - Sam Hornyak, Waverly-Shell Rock vs Brayden Parke, Linn-Mar
This isn’t one of the “best” matches per se, but it could become one of the most talked-about matches of the tournament. At the end of the match, Waverly-Shell Rock’s Sam Hornyak is disqualified for biting Brayden Parke, costing WSR three team points and any potential points Hornyak would have earned on the backside. If Waverly doesn’t win again this year, this will be a major talking point.
113 - Ryker Graff, Southeast Polk vs Zane Behrends, Waverly-Shell Rock
Another good first-round match with huge team race implications. Graff got the first takedown, but it was all Behrends after that.
220 - Ayden Hoag, LeMars vs Evan Franke, Muscatine
Three-seed Ayden Hoag had a big scare at the end of the first period that put him in a hole, but the talented sophomore was able to dig himself out over time.
2A
145 - Cale Kirstein, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows vs Christian Eslick, Roland-Story
The biggest upset of the day came in the form of a dramatic come from behind victory by Cale Kirstein over two-seed Christian Eslick. Eslick injury defaulted out of the tournament meaning the injury time in the third period was likely serious.
195 - Josiah Bundt, MOC-Floyd Valley vs Jayden Allen-Winston, Chariton
Maybe the most exciting match in the round of 16 goes to Josiah Bundt and Jayden Allen-Winston. The two put up 20 points in a sudden victory thriller.
138 - Cole Nelson, Perry vs Kellen Moore, Forest City
Kellen Moore was the returning place winner and four seed, but Cole Nelson gave him all he could handle. It took overtime, but the Forest City junior was able to prevail.
1A
Wouldn't be a state tournament without a little controversy, right? You make the call on this one. Reversal? Escape? No Points?
145 - Nick Steinlage, Interstate 35 vs Kale Munson, Ogden
A textbook duck under to seal the deal in overtime.
170 - Aiden Zook, North Tama vs Kolby Scott, MVAOCOU
This one was slated as one of the best first-round matches in 1A and it lived up the hype. Not a lot of points on the board, but it was a scrap that came down to the WIRE.
