What happens in this round? I will tell you: the round of 16! It's a great round (to be honest, they're all great), where the quarterfinal field is determined. Also the first round of 16 of the consolation bracket (and the pigtail consolation matches) which determines the first 9 wrestlers in each weight class who are eliminated from title contention.
First round match notes can be found here, brackets are here, and the definitive list of the top 10 musical acts from Detroit is here.

We're going to focus on the championship matches, since my puny human brain can only process so much information while blogging, which means we have a few minutes to while the pigtail consolation matches take place.
Okay now we are back in business. Fabian Gutierrez vs Brandon Courtney is the first championship side bout to begin. Courtney gets a quick takedown but then Fab Guti needs injury time. Gutierrez returns to finish the match but last year's finalist races ahead to win 11-3.
Taylor LaMont not messing around with Killian Cardinale, goes up 6-1 in the battle of 2021 All-Americans. Cardinale battles back though and forces overtime. It's 8-8. And Cardinale gets it done! Big victory for the Mountaineers!
Suriano with Team 100 has a 2-1 over Noto, who is getting no mercy just because he defeated Michigan's chief rival for the team trophy, Drew Hildebrandt, in the first round. Suriano wins without giving up an offensive point.
#3 seed Pat Glory out to a 4-1 lead over Jakob Camacho. He advances with minimal difficulty.
Camacho's ACC rival Sam Latona advances over App State Caleb Smith.
Oregon State's Brandon Kaylor used second period nearfall points to take a 6 point lead into the third period. Kaylor gets it done and takes out #6 seed and 2021 All-American Eric Barnett.
Vito Arujau gets a pin to conclude the top side matches at 125 for the day. Except also Mastro and DeAugustino are still wrestling in the battle of extremely long Italian names. And It's DeAugustino that deals a crushing blow to Oklahoma State, picking up a 3-2 win.

All the team title hunting big guns are out. RBY has Navy's Koderhandt, Ragusin has Oregon State's Turner, and DeSanto has Pitt's Phillippi. Arizona State's #3 seed McGee also on the mat against Biscoglia.
RBY gets a fall over Koderhandt and two more big bonus points go on the board for Penn State.
DeSanto doesn't get a takedown until the third but now its 3-0 going into the third.
Ragusin fought off a determined Devin Turner to win 4-2.
Injuries have been the bane of Hudkins career, and unfortunately, his career is likely over as he defaults to VT's Myers.
Daton Fix in a tight bout with NCSU's Kai Orine. It's 2-1 after 1 period. Lots of oohs and ahs from the crowd but Fix still leads 3-1. There's been some dicey scrambles but Fix also came out of them no worse for the wear. Fix gets it done in a highly entertaining 6-4 bout.

How's this for a 2nd round matchup? Sebastian Rivera vs Chad Red. Just 6 All-American honors between them, no big deal. CBass gets the first takedown. 3-0 now in the third. Red escapes, then gets a takedown of his own. He's trying to ride out for the RT point and win. But Rivera stands, turns in and reverses Red. And then? Another reversal! Red can ride out for the win. Oh no he can't, a stall call forces overtime (after the ride out). In sudden victory, Rivera marches Red out of bounds and another stall is called. Cbass wins and advances! Lots of boos from the crowd. Ref is lustily booed. Which is why refs hate calling stalling when the rule book says they are supposed to. People say they want refs to call stalling, but actually, they hate it!
Composto of Penn gets the first takedown on Alirez of Northern Colorado. Alirez answers back to take a 3-2 lead into the third. Composto escapes in time to force sudden victory. Composto locks up a cradle, rolls though and is awarded two, or is it? Nor Col challenges that they were out of bounds, no control. Insanely long review process still going on. Call is overturned! No takedown. Back to SV. Now to tiebreakers. Composto wins it with a few seconds of riding time as criteria. A win via criteria in folkstyle, it happens!
Nick Lee races out to an early lead over Kinner, 6-1. Lee wins 9-2.
Eierman and Kizhan Clarke are in a battle. 2-2 going to sudden victory. Looks like Clarke has the winning takedown but Eierman wants a challenge, said he had the TD via neutral danger. Call on the mat stands, Clarke is on to the quarters!

Beau Bartlett wrestling #4 seed Sasso tough. It's 4-2. Right next to that mat is Eierman vs Clarke, keeping the PSU and Iowa fans occupied on one side of the arena. It's 5-2 in the third, Bartlett single leg, gets thru Sasso's stingy defense and makes it 5-4. Cuts him to make it 6-4. Bartlett pressures in, gets a stall on Sasso but its not enough. Sammy moves on to the quarters.
Andonian doing Andonian things, winning 14-6 after two periods against the very tough Millner.
Gomez winning the takedown battle against Finesilver, seven to zero.

Kaleb Young and Will Lewan in a tight one. This is their first match of the season. Into sudden victory. Lewan with the low double and he scores. Lewan advances for Team 100!
Artalona leads Tariq 2-1 after one period. Tariq responds to take the lead, 4-2 in the third. Tariq holds on for the win.
Would not expect to see #1 seed David Carr in an overtime match this early, but here we are, Hunter Willits pushing him to sudden victory. No scores so we go to tiebreakers. Willits keeps Carr down for 30. Then escapes with a couple of seconds to go. MASSIVE UPSET. Hunter Willits hands Carr his first lost in forever.
Teemer was in a tight one with Keating of UVA, but then stepped over at the right time and secures the fall. Bonus points for the Sun Devils.

Ramirez gets the first takedown on Hamiti, but the superfrosh escapes and takes Ramirez down. Reversal and a cradle for four nearfall gives Ramirez a big advantage, but Himiti doesn't quit so this one is far from over. And there comes Hamiti storming back. He now leads 14-11 late in the third. And Ramirez isn't getting out. Hamiti shakes off the early setback and fights his way into the quarters with 15-11 bout of pure dynamite.
O'Toole with an early lead over Valencia. Kharchla with a 4-1 lead over Wentzel. Griffith leads Zach Hartman 4-1. Marinelli leads McCoy 2-1, and Wick leads Weber 4-2. All the big guns of 165 are on the mat and all the favorites leading (save for Hamiti anyway).
Peyton all and Phil Conigliaro in a predictably tight bout from the 9 and 8 seed. It's 3-3 going into the 3rd. Hall pulls away in the third to give the Mountaineers two in the quarterfinals.
Cam Amine one of the last 165 pounders to take the mat. He gets a 3-0 lead over Olejnik, from Northern Illinois by way of California. It came down to the final seconds but Amine avoids a takedown and wins the bout.

Braunagel and Coleman in a 1-1 slobberknocker as we go to sudden victory. And in the biggest flurry of the bout, Braunagel flips Coleman and sticks him for the pin. Always nice to score bonus points in an overtime bout.

Schultz and Bulsak square off in a battle of super seniors who have yet to earn NCAA All-American honors. Schultz prevailed 3-2.
Woodley takes a 2-1 lead into the second over Brucki in a huge match for Michigan and the team race. Brucki ties it up 2-2 in the third, but Woodley escpaes to make it 3-2. Woodley holds on for a 6-3 win, as Woodley advances for the second year in a row to the quarters from a low seed.
Aiello bravely chose bottom to start the second of a scoreless bout against Max Dean. he gets a reversal and a rideout to take a 2-0 lead. Dean chooses down to start the third. Dean wins a key 50/50 exchange that had both wrestlers in precarious positions to squeak by to win 4-2. That could prove critical in the team race as Brucki went down in this round.
Keeping pace with Dean is Warner of Iowa, who defeated Penola of Purdue 3-1.

Michigan has the most in the quarters with seven but bonus points will put Penn State in the lead going into Session Three.
Arizona State has five in the quarters and bonus points will keep them in the hunt for now. Penn State and Iowa both have six in the quarters.
That'll do it for round two. Apologies for all the typos, see you tomorrow for round three and four, including the celebrated dog bone configuration!
