Gold/Silver Pool Set After High-Flying Day Of Greco At Junior Duals
Blowout victories and down-to-the-wire duals set the stage for Thursday's Greco-Roman title push at the Junior Duals in Tulsa.
Minnesota and California plowed through the Greco-Roman competition Wednesday at USA Wrestling's Junior Duals in Tulsa, while Illinois and Oklahoma walked a tightrope to the same destination.
At the end of the tournament's opening day, those four teams won their respective pools and secured a spot in Thursday's Gold/Silver pool, along with Washington, Florida, Wisconsin and Iowa.
Minnesota tore through Pool A with three lopsided wins, beating Kansas Red (68-2), Tennessee (48-17) and Washington (56-12) while racking up 39 wins in 45 individual bouts.
California was nearly as dominant in Pool C, posting blowout victories against South Carolina (67-3), Kansas Blue (41-23) and Wisconsin (44-17).
Illinois, aiming for its fifth straight Junior Greco title, nearly got knocked off in the Pool B final. Florida collected two pins, a disqualification victory and four technical superiority victories to force a 33-33 tie that tipped in Illinois' favor on criteria, thanks to its eight match victories in 15 bouts.
The Pool D final went down to the wire as well before Oklahoma edged Iowa 34-32 when A.J. Heeg held off Tate Naaktgeboren 7-5 in a battle of Big 12-bound 182-pounders.
