Day 1: Joel Adams Going For Gold In Rome
Joel Adams led the way for Team USA by picking up four wins without surrendering a point. He moved into the 65-kg finals at the U17 Worlds in Rome.
Session 1
The U17 Greco-Roman World Championships ended on a high note for Team USA at the end of the first session. Joel Adams won three straight matches to reach the semifinals at 65 kilograms.
Adams was on fire during his opening match, hitting a five-point throw from par terre and ended it a few seconds later with an 8-0 technical superiority. His round of 16 match was more of the same after Adams scored a four-point throw to finish the match with a 10-0 tech.
The quarterfinals were a bit closer, with Adams scoring a passivity point, turn, two step-outs, and a lost challenge for a 6-0 win. He faces Petro Shafranskyi of Ukraine in the semis and is guaranteed to wrestle for a medal.
Koy Hopke was the only other American to win a match after picking up an 8-0 win in the round of 16, but lost 8-0 in the quarterfinals. Cole Han-Lindemyer (80 kg) is the only American who has been knocked out of the tournament. Hopke, Christian Castillo, and Nick Treaster still have a chance to get pulled into the repechage.
