Day 4: Gomez and Hamilton Reach Semis, Pastoriza Wins Silver
US women sent two wrestlers to the semifinals while four wrestlers fell short in their medal matches.
ROME, Italy — US women began their second day of competition with the second of 10 weight classes. Gabriella Gomez (46 kg) and Valerie Hamilton (61 kg) reached the finals while Shelby Moore (57 kg), Sydney Perry (65 kg), and Kaiulani Garcia (73 kg) earned their way into bronze medal matches with repechage wins.
Gomez used a relentless pace to pick an 8-2 win in the first round, a 12-1 tech in the quarterfinals and a razor-thin 3-3 decision in the semis. Hamilton had a wild first-round match then picked up a fall in the quarterfinals before making the finals with a close, but controlled win. The remaining three women on Team USA were eliminated during the semifinal round.
In the medal matches, Erica Pastoriza ran into a buzzsaw in Ritika (IND). The Indian controlled the match from start to finish and eventually earned a fall while leading 9-0 with just over 10 seconds left in the match. Shelby Moore wrestled in a very competitive bronze medal match but fell just short in a 4-2 loss to Ulmeken Esenbaeva (UZB). Up at 65kg, Sydney Perry also fell short and finished in 5th after losing a controlling, 7-0 decision to Zharkynai Nurlan (KGZ). In the final bronze medal match of the day, Kaiulani Garcia got out to a 6-0 lead before her opponent locked up a throw and was able to secure the fall with just 7 seconds left in the match.
