UWW U20 World Championships Match Notes - Day 5
Day 5 of the U20 World Championships features five women wrestling for medals and a Greco semifinalist.
The Americans had a big day with the five remaining women wrestling for medals with Aiden Attao reaching the Greco semifinals. Action at the U20 World Championships begins at 9:45 a.m. Eastern.
SEMIFINALS (130 kg): Mykhailo Vyshnyvetskyi (Ukraine) over Aden Attao (USA), 10-0
First period: Vyshnyvestsky powered through on a high dive and transitioned into a gut for a 4-0 lead and extended the lead to 6-0 seconds later with an arm spin. A four-point arm spin seconds later ends the match, 10-0. Attao wrestles for bronze tomorrow.
BRONZE MEDAL MATCH (53 kg): Katie Gomez (USA) over Shaimaa Mohamed (Egypt), 12-2
First period: Gomez scores four off of a sweep single to take a 4-0 lead but Mohamed cuts the lead in half with a takedown seconds later. Gomez counters a takedown attempt and scores on a series of laces for a 12-2 tech. Katie Gomez wins the bronze medal.
GOLD MEDAL MATCH (57 kg): Ruka Natami (Japan) over Sofia Macaluso (USA), 6-1
First period: Natami gets placed on the activity clock at 4:25 and doesn't score, which gives Macaluso the first point of the match. Macaluso takes a 1-0 lead into the break.
Second period: Natami fires off a single and converts to take a 2-1 lead with 2:17 to go. Macaluso attempts an inside trip, a scramble ensues, but no scoring takes place. Natami picks up a takedown and a lace at the edge to take a 6-1 lead. with nine seconds remaining. Macaluso fought valiantly, but dropped the match, 6-1, and wins the silver medal.
BRONZE MEDAL MATCH (62 kg): Adaugo Nwachukwu (USA) over Bermet Nuridin Kyzy (KGZ), 10-0
First period: Nwachukwu gets on the board early with a two-on-one step-out. She countered a throw attempt a few seconds later for four then picks up two turns for a 9-0 lead with 4:53 to go. She ends it with a driving step-out with 4:42 remaining for a 10-0 technical superiority. Adaugo Nwachukwu wins the bronze medal.
BRONZE MEDAL MATCH (65 kg): Khadija Jlassi (Tunisia) over Reese Larramendy (USA), 9-2
First period: Larramendy limp-arms out of a whizzer to take a 2-0 lead at the break.
Second period: Jlassi scores four off of the whistle with a single to take a 4-2 lead. Jlassi gets one more with a step-out. Jlassi drives through on a shot at the edge of the mat for four more to take a 9-2 lead. Jlassi is your winner, 9-2. Reese Larramendy places fifth.
GOLD MEDAL MATCH (72 kg): Amit Elor (USA) over Anastassiya Panassovich (Kazakhstan), 10-0
First period: Elor scores the first point 50 seconds into the match on a step-out from an underhook then scores on a go-behind a few seconds later for a 3-0 lead. Elor snags a takedown off of an underhook then picks up to laces for a 9-0 lead. Elor ends the match on a step-out with 3:52 remaining for a 10-0 technical superiority. Amit Elor wins the 72-kg gold medal at U20 Worlds.
