A Greco - Roman wrestler for Cuba, Borrero has been competing on the senior level since 2012 and has enjoyed much success along the way. Borrero won the Pan American championships in his first three showings along with gold at the Cerro Pelado International in 2013, and gold at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2014. After finishing fifth at the 2014 world championships, Borrero made his way back to the Central American and Caribbean Games to claim another gold. Borrero began his 2015 campaign with a bronze medal at the granma cup but ended it with a bang when he claimed his first world championship in Las Vegas. Borrero's claim to fame came in Rio at the 2016 olympic games when he won the gold medal in the 59 kg weight class defeating Japan's Shinobu Ota in the gold medal match.
