Steve Mocco came to Iowa as highly touted as anyone had been in a long time. He had one thing in mind as a freshman--the 2002 NCAA title. Mocco made it to the NCAA finals but lost to Ohio State's Tommy Rowlands, who rode Mocco out in the tiebreaker.
And that ate at him, big time.
Mocco's hunger and obsession with winning only increased. He found motivation in is his loss. To remind himself of how it felt to lose, Mocco put up big pictures on his wall of Rowlands celebrating and of the awards podium. It was what he looked at every night before he went to bed.
"I should have won that match," Mocco said. "I remember sitting in my bed at home and just thinking, ‘I wish I could get off the bottom now.' But it was over. And that drove me, man. I had a big picture of Tommy celebrating. I had a big picture of the podium. So, on one side of my room was a big picture of him getting his hand raised. On the other side of the room was the podium.
"And that’s all I looked at man, that’s all I looked. Every time before I went to bed I looked at it. You know what I mean? I was completely, fanatically entrenched with winning an NCAA title at that point."
Mocco's name conjures up lots of images and ideas: intensity, intimidation, and brutality, just to name a few.
To say this mythical figure has lived a unique life would be an understatement. So why don't we know much about Mocco?
The answer is because he doesn't like to talk much. The two-time NCAA champion, Hodge Trophy winner, and 2008 Olympian explains why in FloFilms' upcoming two-episode feature, airing October 19 and October 26.
