Malik Johnson is in a 16-man bracket for day one of Cadet Worlds. He landed in the bottom half, and will avoid both hammers in Poya Dad Marz (IRI) and Giorgi Shotadze (GEO). His first-round opponent is Abdullah Toprak (TUR), a virtual unknown who seems to have placed third at a tournament in his home country called the Mahmut Atalay & Yasar Erkan. Johnson’s quarterfinal opponent will be the winner of Russia/Ukraine. Anzor Karagulov (RUS) was a European bronze medalist last year down at 46kg, and his opponent Viacheslav Cherniak (UKR) has no results that could be found.

Looking at his possible semis or repechage opponents, Johnson could see one of three continental level medalists, or a guy who placed fifth in the world last year at 46kg. Samvel Grigoryan was silver at the European championships, while both Asian bronze medalists in Yerassyl Nurbossynov (KAZ) and Vijay (IND) sit in the bottom quarter. Kaito Inaba (JPN) lost in the bronze medal match last year in Sarajevo.

54kg

Real Woods is at the very bottom of his 54kg bracket. His first-round opponent is making his Worlds debut, but Zholaman Sharshenbekov (KGZ) has two continental medals to his name. He won 46kg a year ago and took bronze at this weight earlier this year.

Waiting in the next round will be either Riccardo Glave (ITA) or Dilshod Omongeldiyev (UZB). Both are making their world debut, though Glave did wrestle at Euros. Title favorite Khachatryan of Armenia is on the other side of the bracket.

58kg

In keeping with the theme of day one, Jack Davis is waiting on some wild cards to see who he wrestles. As expected, 15-17 year olds typically aren't backed by a great deal of results, and Asian countries tend to keep their best at home until Worlds.

Tatto Oshiro (JPN) is a potential matchup if he beats Anton Rosen (SWE) in the first round. Rosen was the Nordic champ and fifth at Euros this year. Davis ends up with both the Asian champ in Mohktari of Iran and the Euro champ in Basar of Turkey on his half of the bracket.

63kg

Peyton Omania ended up on the bottom half, and drew Asian bronze medalist Saurabh of India in the first round. If he moves on, Omania will see either Japan or Estonia in the next round. Jegor Jakolev (EST) has never wrestled at Cadet Worlds, but has made four consecutive Nordic finals and has experience at the continental level. We could not locate any information on Ryoma Anraku of Japan.

Cohlton Schultz has a very favorable draw on the top side, and will avoid all of the known hammers. But we will find out tomorrow if the unknowns are hammers as well, starting with his first round match against Yuri Nakazato of Japan.
