Hawaii has become a hot bed for girl’s wrestlers, known now throughout the country, holding Jr. National Championships, National Championships, World Championships, and soon to be Olympic Championships – the most in the nation! But opportunities for competition have been few due to our isolation in islands and leagues. The Pa’ani Challenge is an island-wide all girls high school wrestling tournament created-for Hawaii’s young women to engage in meaningful competition during their high school wrestling season. This year we are inviting nationally ranked teams from the mainland to come as well. Because the competition is not limited to 1st stringers only, all girls are thrilled to get multiple matches at their own skill levels. The bonds of goodwill between all of Hawaii’s high school sports leagues, teams, athletes and families thrive during this type of event.
The Pa’ani Challenge will provide not only athletic benefit in the form of clinics and competition, but also an opportunity for the athletes to develop a vision of life beyond high school, and a network to pursue that vision with a college fair targeted specifically for the participants. In its inaugural year, 2010, over 250 high school girls competed from public and private schools from every island in the state, making it the largest tournament of its kind in the country.
This year, the event will be expanded and invitations will be extended to mainland teams to further enhance the opportunities and experiences for our girls of the future. In addition, the wrestling matches will be streamed on TrackWrestling.com, THE national site for college and military recruiters that provides the visibility for these wrestlers as they embark on life after high school.
