Frank Molinaro wrestled under Cael Sanderson at Penn State during the 2010-12 seasons — placing fifth at the NCAA championships as a sophomore, second as a junior and first as a senior. Molinaro eventually placed fifth at the 2016 Olympics and is currently an assistant at Arizona State.

How is this for an improbable ending?

USA Wrestling executive director Rich Bender has consistently called this a golden age for American wrestling. And if you look at the output at the senior international level — he’s right.

The goal is a gold medal at the Olympics Games. When that goal is no longer a reality, many of the country’s best wrestlers retire from active competition immediately following the Olympic Trials. 

The unpredictable occurring at Olympic Trials is nothing new.  In 2016 Frank Molinaro and J’den Cox made the team out of the 9 seed.  Jake Deitchler was still in high school and made the 08 team in Greco. 

Brandon Slay transformed from a seventh seed in the U.S. Open into an Olympic champion in a span of six months.  

The 2021 US Olympic Trials go down this weekend. All the action will be streamed either through NBC Sports Network or NBC's Peackock streaming service. There are many significant milestones on the way to wrestling notoriety. Winning a championship in the powerhouse single-class state of New Jersey, for instance, or attaining the ultimate collegiate prize of an NCAA title, or going Gorilla Hulk beast mode in the final seconds of a World Team Trials match. Nittany Lion great Frank Molinaro has done all of those things and more, such as being an Olympian, which is quite notable.

Yesterday on FRL, the Gorilla Hulk announced that he is officially hanging up the shoes and stepping away from the sport of wrestling as an athlete.

With the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament coming up, it's time we take a look at some compelling reasons why 65kg could be the most entertaining weight class in Raleigh. 

The 2019 U.S. Open is going to be stacked at most every weight, but 65kg, in particular, is not only loaded, it also seems to be the versatile weight class.
