It's hard to overstate how much exciting college wrestling took place this past weekend. All seven conferences held their championships over the last few days and determined the majority of the qualifiers for the 2024 NCAA Championships that will take place in less than two weeks in Kansas City, Missouri.

All the usual caveats apply. What are upsets strictly according to the most recent set of NCAA D1 rankings may not look like upsets by the end of the season, or even next week!

A lot happened in Norman since the 2023 NCAA tournament - former head coach Lou Rosselli resigned, former North Dakota State head coach Roger Kish was selected as his successor, assistants Nick Heflin, Sam Hazewinkel and Mike Lightner left, new assistants Austin Marsden and Cam Sykora were brought in, seven wrestlers hit the transfer portal, and eight wrestlers transferred in. While a lot has happened, I still expect 70% of this year’s starting lineup to either be either back from last year’s lineup or coming off of a redshirt year in Norman.

The transfer portal has forever changed college wrestling. It’s now no longer rare to see All-Americans pack up and head somewhere else. While the list below doesn’t include any All-Americans, it includes six very skilled wrestlers. Most of the top-end talent has already been scooped up from the transfer portal, but there is still a couple of potential impactful transfers looming.

What better way to ring in the new year and the second half of the college season than by sitting on your couch all day and watching wrestling? It’s going to be easy this year with the Southern Scuffle set to be one of the best ever.
