The summer before entering high school, Jesse Mendez was on the cusp of placing at every major - Akron, Fargo, Super 32...he just missed with blood round loses. A year later, he's our #1 prospect at 157 with titles in single-class Indiana, FloNationals, Akron, and Pan Ams, and with a spot on the World Team.

He edged our #3 here (Ferrari) in Akron, who was runner-up for the second straight year.

In between is Victor Voinovich who took some unexpected losses in his Sophomore campaign but bounced back in a huge way with a fine performance at UWW Junior Nationals (Vegas) and is a top threat in Fargo next week.

Jesse Vasquez checks in at #4 and if you consider him higher, I don't blame you. He's an uber talent with finals appearances at the last two Super 32's. I go conservative with him after over a calendar year where he's wrestled only occasionally. I just need to see more of him to have the confidence that comes with a loftier ranking.

Rounding out the Top 5 is Joey Zargo, whose position may surprise you. He didn't even place at the state tournament as a JR. I don't care. He had a fantastic spring with a FloNats title and a 5th place showing at Akron. I believe his skill set - particularly his leg attacks and finishes - translate to the next level. The ultimate case of resume vs. assessment, Zarto, in my opinion, is just scratching the surface and can be a D1 problem right out of the gate.

What's also interesting to note here is that the Top 7 and twenty of the twenty-five ranked prospects at 157, are uncommitted.
